Returning to the game what do you think of this niche comp? (Market Samurai Stats)

Hello fellow Warriors. It's been a while.

So I'm into ranking niche sites but I've been out of the game for quite a while due to my personal life interfering...but I'm back for good hopefully!

Anyways, I'm slowly digesting all the information I've been missing over the past 3+ years and it doesn't seem like too much has changed. As long as you are legit that is .

So here's the stats I pulled off a niche from MS and just wanted to get some feedback on if this appears as wide open as it would seem. I feel I could be missing something for some reason because it just seemed way to easy to find.



For those that don't use MS here's the cheat sheet:

DA = Domain Age
PR = Page Rank
CF = Citation Flow
TF = Trust Flow
IC = Index Count
RDD = Backlinks from Unique Domains
RDP = Unique Backlinks to the specific page (targeting the keyword)
BLP = The total number of backlinks pointing to a specific URL
BLD = Meh
BLEG = Edu/Gov BL's
DMZ = Dmoz
Title = Keyword in Title
URL = Keyword in URL
Desc = Keyword in Description Tag
Head = Keyword in Header Tag

I appreciate any input you guys have.

    I would stop using Market Samurai. It is a waste of time. Nothing in that chart really tells you how difficult it will be to rank.

        Why? It provides nothing of value.

        Link counts, age, TF, DA, number of EDU/GOV links (that alone tells you that the program is full of shit and the designers have no idea what they are doing), number of pages in the index,.... I could go on. It's all useless data when analyzing the competition.

      None of that info tells you how strong 1-3 are... Look at the info again and come up, based on the info from market samurai, why #1 is #1.

      You'll notice that you can't. And, hopefully, conclude that Market Samurai is not helping you.

      There's someone on this forum, can't remember the name, that says adding up the DA and averaging is a way to gauge if the keyword is competitive... And it makes sense... unless you want to be #1...

      Then, you need to figure out what #1 is doing.

      All the info you gave says #1 isn't optimizing for the keyword... It's #1 either because of internal linking or because of external linking or a combo...

      It's telling you that whatever linking they have is better than the superior onpage optimization of #2 and 3 combined with their respective backlinking strategies.

      (In case you didn't catch this, PR has not been publicly updated since mid-2013, so you can't rely on it to make your decisions.)

      Why not use market samurai to figure out who's in the first position, then use something like majestic seo to analyze that page and figure out if you can beat them?

        None of them really do a good job at analyzing competition. You have to do that yourself. The only thing remotely close to doing a decent job is actually Moz's keyword tool because they actually factor in link quality in their scoring. Of course, it is based on the OpenSite Explorer database of links, which I find to be piss poor, but at least they are trying.

        It's kind of silly that there are all these keyword tools out there and they ignore the #1 ranking factor which is quantity of quality of incoming links. Many of them look at quantity, but that is useless on its own.

    First welcome back!

    I agree, Market Samurai is not giving you the information that you need.

    For some basic free options, install the MozBar https://moz.com/tools/seo-toolbar and use it to look at the first page of results. That will give you the PA and DA of each site. Then look at the top sites in SEMRush.com which will give you an idea of what keywords they are ranking for and other competitive data.

    Moz's OpenSiteExplorer will give you limited backlink profile information for free, but I prefer Majestic.com or Ahrefs.com (both paid) for getting into the nitty gritty with backlinks, anchor distribution, etc.
