PageRank?

People say PR is no longer relevant. What are your opinions on this? It has been said that the toolbar is no longer updated, but is PR itself still relevant? There are still plugins and add-ons out there that do PR.

And if not PR, what do you use to tell how good a website is?

  • I don't know about your first question but if PR is no more valid then alexa rank can tell us the position of a website

    • Alexa can't.

PR is important. But you have no way of knowing the current PR of a page.

You use your noggin and fingers to tell if a site is good... Or accept the approximations you get from PA and DA, which are often waaaaaaaaaaaay off, so off that you could say they've got nothing to do with reality.

But you only need to know if the top page for a search is good, if the keyword is not competitive, and the 3rd one for competitive keywords... Assuming here you'd be happy to be #3 because of high conversions or traffic.

For that, all you need to do is put the url into something like majestic SEO and look at the websites linking to it and the anchor texts.

    • Toolbar PR is not updated, but everything points to the direction that PageRank is still a major ranking factor. I'm fairly certain that Google reps have said this too. You don't need much else than backlinks still working like they've always done to see that not much has changed in the big picture.

I've said this a few times, but you should not get your SEO information from UIs of software. Some software is outdated, and others display PR as a convenience.

As DABK pointed out 3rd party estimations are the way to go. Pick your poison. There's folk who like to use Moz's offerings, and I guess they may work pretty well for quick evaluations in cases where there's a lot of links, and you either don't suspect them of foul play or it doesn't matter too much. I'd take either Ahrefs or Majestic to evaluate the backlink profile. They may be inaccurate too, but usually the score is in the right ballpark.

Only if you're happy with any number, no matter how wrong it is.

Alexa is very inaccurate with small sites, and they may not fare too well with large sites either. They interpolate the data from the use of their toolbar (and some other sources).

I have an idea. How about ChimpRank, an "algorithm" powered by 200 monkeys (job title: "Ranking Factor"). I'd print website names, and these primates would arrange them in some manner by throwing them around. If they eat your sign or throw poop at it, that's a penalty.

You'd happily use that as a proof of your popularity, wouldn't you?

  • Doesn't Alexa only rank sites based on if the user uses the Alexa toolbar? I never use Alexa. I use SEOQuake and Chrome's PageRank plugin. And I also look at what the top 3 results are in a search.
  • The PR we can see is a dead metric, it is not updated, so when you see PR7 or whatever it might actually have not PR at all, or vs Versa.

Google still uses PR but they don't share the ranking with the public.

There is nothing that can replace PR since it was a metric coming straight from Google, but companies like Moz simulate it with Moz Rank.... it is the best we have now.
  • basically, Pagerank is dead now but Alexa rank and other SEO tools are being used to check the website ranking. Yeah, I agree with you that a lot of people using toolbar only to keep updated with website ranking.

    • Only morons are using Alexa rank for much of anything.
    • Alexa rank is a vanity metric, not a SEO tool. You should probably know this because of your username and signature.
    • No. Amazon's enterprising people are not that stupid.

And you offer seo services? Man that is laughable.

Any fool in seo should know PR is not dead, and alexa can never be used
to check how a website ranks in search engines.

I can't even decipher your last sentence. Something got lost in translation.

  • Website PR is now not more important as far as I know. You should emphasize on your keyword to rank that's better.

    • Alexa rank is a pointless guess. It's often not even in the ballpark. What can you possibly derive from this score? Yeah, it's a rhetorical question because there's no meaningful answer that you could give.

Track something that matters like SERP rankings.
    • ROTFLMAO! You claim you offer intelligent services, and
give a moronic answer like that? You just told the world your
      SEO IQ is almost zero.

  • pr is important for web site or page ,,
  • For a normal user who is not known with such activities may ignore these things. So , if you are asking according to your target audience then it does not matter much. Moreover, if your website is structured, well organized and optimized then your website authority will surely get increased. Do not worry about page rank, just focus on maintaining quality of your services and content on website. Slowly, you will get good PR and visitors as well.

Page Rank is one of the best and most popular way to make visible your website to search engines. You can hire a specialist to make your page rank higher. You can look of fiverr to get peoples in cheaper rate.
  • The four resources that I have found to be the best alternatives to PageRank. That group includes Moz, Majestic, Ahrefs, and Blekko.
  • Page rank is the important factor for a website but i think domain authority is also valuable with PR.
  • I think, although no assessment google PR, but with one person doing SEO, you should always choose high PR sites to build backlinks, because actually PR has been included as one criterion for evaluating the DA (domain author), not that it does not matter anymore.
  • I am also confuse whether PR /Alexa or DA are relevant or not? I think as page rank is not update since last two years people will seek other options to measure the rank of their sites. It is not clear yet which tool is perfect for the purpose?

  • Pr is important and but PA and DA is a part of page rank .
Google chorom extension seo quake and PA and DA check you use moz toolbar and you visit any site show on top website PA and DA .
If PA And DA is high then your site is rank easily.

    • Everything you said is wrong.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • So you're saying that Google uses much weaker 3rd party metrics that were created to crudely mimic the Pagerank as part of the Pagerank? That's astounding, and truly newsworthy!

Or you're a moron who fails at basic logic.

  • I think now in 2015 you should use
    Page authority
    Domain Authority
    Trust flow
    citation flow
To check PA and DA you should install browser extension from moz
    called Mozbar
To check TF and CF you should install extension from majestic called Majestic Backlink Analyzer
  • You guys just read title of the post please do deep resarch on the topic,if i post an article which contain rumor will you beleive? Google PR is still alive but Google Toolbar PageRank is Finally and Officially Dead,I don't care about Alexa rank

PageRank is Google's ranking software that calculates the relevance of a webpage to the search keywords entered. The software analyses both the number of incoming links and the 'quality' of the referring webpage.

  • PR is dead, and officially confirmed by Google. So don't care of that.

Mainly now look forward - backlink profile, TF, CF, DA and PA.
