I agreed. You should implement 301-redirect on those pages. But make sure to redirect them on their related pages only.

yeah, it's really bad for SEO. You need to optimize those pages or redirect them on the similar resources or the home. it is the necessary part of SEO.

Create a custom 404 error page that way it won't be seen as a broken link which is worse.

Well, all kidding aside, if you have a site like WP, blogspot, or other CMS,
that has things like search....it is possible for google to crawl those
one off generated pages. robots.txt fixes this.

It's not bad for seo, really, in that respect, because nobody in their right mind
is going to search for anything that one of those pages will pop up on the first
        page.

That's the key. Nonsense pages giving 404 errors are moot.

Now if your money pages give a 404 error, well, you are an idiot.
Either that or your site blew up, you forgot to do all pages if changing
        servers, etc.

You can't prevent 404 errors, but you can prevent them on the pages
        that you care about.

Of course, some of you could care less...so we get threads like this.

If your site is generating tons of one off pages...and keeping them....
hire someone to fix that. It's not good in the long run to waste
        resources.

            Okay, here goes.

The majority of the repliers in this thread are morons.

How can 404 errors affect SEO? Non existent crapola....
affects search results? Oh for those imaginary search results?

If you have 404 errors ON PAGES THAT SHOULD BE THERE,
then you are an idiot with a capital I. Has nothing to do
with SEO, but with how brain dead a webmaster is.

Newsflash: 302, 301, whatever the number of the day because you
heard someone last week, CANNOT prevent 404 errors.

Yeah, I too agree with you that page not found the bad error for SEO. 301 redirect is a permanent redirect which passes away the 90 to 99% link juice.

404s errors can lead to so many different things...

    1. You are not utilizing the power of link juice..
    2. You are wasting Google's crawl budget by showing too many 404 pages.
    3. 404s may lead to pogo sticking that may give Search Engines hint that your site is not user-friendly..

So redirect your 404s to genuine pages with pages that has similar content to 404s...

You can also create a custom 404s that could create a funny gesture to the users.. And add internal links to it.. so the internal links get index quickly...

404 pages are bad in the sense that these pages decrease your customer retention rate....that is why Google recommends having a "custom" 404 page so that the lost user will be guided accordingly and is retained...
