There are also html sitemaps, which basically is a webpage with all the pages from that website, so visitors can find what they need. It's harder to create one with bigger websites.

But the most common one, the xml sitemap that anyone else said about, is a xml generated with all the links in your website. You can go at Google and Bing webmaster and submit your sitemap so search engines can crawl your website properly. Is like the words suggest, a Map for your Site content. As a little detail, i also have a link in footer for my sitemap, so random search engines can also find it easily.

How is that important for SEO ? Well, if search engines can't know about all your pages you might miss a lot of traffic.
Think about the virtual road that search engines need to take to crawl. Normally, to get to your page 5 at your website, you need to take page 1 - page 2 - page 3 - page 4 - page 5.
With a sitemap the road is quicker : sitemap - page 5. Done
Now imagine how this benefits a website with hundreds of post / page . Not to mentions tags and categories.

To wrap things up, sitemap is my first concern in SEO, for obvious reasons.

Ryan, There are two popular versions of a site map. An XML Sitemap is truly a structured format that a consumer will not should see, nevertheless it tells the search engine in regards to the webpages within a site, their relative importance to each other, and how oftentimes they really are up to date. HTML sitemaps are made for the person to help you them notice subject matter relating to the website page, and do not really need to incorporate every single subpage. This can help people and search engine bots find out web pages to the page. You can't submit an HTML sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools as it isn't a supported sitemap format.

In a lay man's terms, sitemap is a map of the website. You can go through sitemap to understand what website contains. It is just like an index of a book. It lists down all the pages of the website in question. Sitemap helps search engine crawlers to know about your website and reach to all the pages.

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for Web design, or a Web page that lists the pages on a Web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion.

Must 50 people parrot the same lame answers?

You don't need an xml sitemap.

If your site needs an xml sitemap, then your SEO is lousy.

A sitemap cannot, repeat CANNOT, makeup for an idiotic
constructed site. And if your site is structured the way it
should be, well, an sitemap is moot.

However, it makes webmasters feel good. Like they're "doing"
something. Hamsters get the same feeling in the wheel.

You get a book. It has a Contents page. A sitemap is the Contents Page of your site.

If you have a 4-page book with 1 chapters, do you need a contents page?

How about if you have a 4-page website?

By the way, even if you have a lot of pages on your site, if you have good navigation and/or internal links, Google will find them.

If you can't find your pages in Google, it's not because you don't have a site map, it's because Google's determined that it's redundant crap.

Everyone here did a good job of explaining what a sitemap is. Here's how to implement one for your website.

    1) Download Yoast WordPress plugin.

    2) Go to XML Sitemaps

    3) If you are a single author blog, disable the author sitemap. On a one author blog you will be showing the same content under date and author archives so it is best to disable this feature.

    4) Exclude tags from your sitemap. The reason for this is you don't want tags getting indexed. There may be a bit of debate around this, but as a general rule this is how I look at it:

Categories should always be indexed and serve as the topics of your blog. They help search engine understand the topics of your site. Clearly define what you are going to write about based on keyword research and define clear categories from the start. This way you build up content closely related to the keywords and topics that are important. Try not to constantly add new categories. Keep your blog focused.

Tags are more of a feature for users If you use a tag cloud or use post metadata you can add tags to help link related content and help people find it easier.

    5) Hit 'Save Changes' and you're done.

Now go to the General tab and click on the XML Sitemap button.

Those are your XML sitemaps. What you need to do next is create a Google Search Console (Webmaster Tools) account and add those sitemaps there to help your site get indexed faster. Create a Bing Webmaster Tools account and do the same thing there.

Think of a sitemap as a list of files that give hints to the search engines on how they can crawl your website. Sitemaps help search engines find and classify content on your site that they may not have found on their own. Sitemaps also come in a variety of formats and can highlight many different types of content, including video, images, news, and mobile.

How does your Sitemap affect your SEO?

Search engines should see all the pages that you want them to see. The more pages that they index from you, the more trust your site gains. It only means that your website has more information to offer.
Making sure the search engine spiders get to crawl all the stuff they need to crawl from your website is the exact purpose of a Sitemap. It’s not for navigation, it’s not for internal linking. It’s for the search engine spiders.
It won’t greatly boost your on-site SEO, but it would definitely help.
