Hi guys, I'm new to the whole internet marketing thing and have what many might perceive as a stupid question. When someone is selling a brand new website on say Flippa, and they say it's got 7,435 links to it, is that more than likely just because they've added their URL to one of the signatures of a forum the post in with 7,435 comments?

    It probably means that they have bought a gig on Fiverr offering 'top quality' backlinks. They were probably added within a couple of days and they are absolutely worthless.

    You can check the backlinks through one of the many tools that are available free or paid online. Google free online backlink checker or something similar and find out.. Each site is different so no idea what the situation is on the one you are mentioning..

    Personally I wouldn't buy a website that has a very poor linking profile. To be more precise this sort of tactics makes you extremely vulnerable to ranking algorithm changes. You can use tools like ahrefs.com and any other backlink checker in order to check the type/quality of the links. If you find them to be of "Fiverr" quality, as PaulSch noticed, then stay away from this seller.

    You need quality not quantity when it comes to backlinks.

    Google loves a new site to be almost dormant for a year, then links slowly appear as it gets found "naturally".

      No, Google doesn't like new sites to be almost dormant for a year.

      I know that because I got on page 1, in the top 2 positions, for websites that were less than 2 months old. And started making some money.

      Good thing I didn't know Google likes them to be almost dormant for a year, huh?

        I am very curious. Did you buy back links? Did you build the links manually? Did you use article directories and SEO?

          I did not buy backlinks. I have a few sites in related niches I link from, got some from some articles I posted on a few sites (not directories, lately; 2 or 3 years ago, I relied a lot on directories), some videos on several sites, photos, and some people who decided to link to me because they liked what they saw. People sometimes do that. Or tweet about an article of mine and someone else links to it.

          Or I post on article sites and people copy my articles and I get a link or two that are followed. If I liked their site, I try to get them to accept more articles of mine.

          I used website directories too.

          Mostly, though: links from sites I own, internal linking. My sites, tend to have homepages with PR of 2, a few 1, a few 3, a few 0. I know, I know, Google doesn't show but when it did, that's what it showed. By now, some of them would be higher.


          And, of course, I pick keywords with medium or lower competition.

          The hardest keyword I ever went for is equivalent, in difficulty, to ab machines.

    Check the links with majestic/ahrefs and see if they are forum profile links.

    If he's bragging about 7,435 links then they are probably trash.
