How to handle google maps and directories without address?

Can someone offer some advice on what to do about google maps and business directories for those without a physical address?

I work from home and don't want my home address published online. Google maps doesn't allow using a P.O. box or something like a UPS store box. I know you can sign up with google maps and then select the option to use a service area instead of showing your address, but how would that effect seo when it comes to other online business directories? For example, if I don't have an address on google maps or the address is different than my address on other online business directories, wouldn't that be harmful for seo?

  • Sounds like people don't come to your location to do business with you. That means that, even if you had a physical location you didn't mind making public, you should still choose the service area. If you chose the address, Google will not show you in the pack anyway.

    • That's correct, people don't come to my location, my work is done online. So, let's say I pick the service area and then purchase a P.O. box to use on other business directories. Would be ok for local seo? There wouldn't be any penalties or anything?
