The link you dropped is the link back to your site. Regardless of whether or not your link is follow or nofollow, one link like that is not going to mean much.
Think of links as a collection of something you have an interest in, the link profile is something that requires cultivation, maintenance, proper planning, strategy, and lots of hard work to become something that will earn you search traffic.
The clicks you get aren't really meaningful in themselves, building links that drive traffic are always good, but click-throughs don't make them more powerful or effective at ranking your content.

It has to be indexed by Google to count but it was a backlink the whole time.

I do not think the number of the viewers for your thread is relevant to your backlink ... the number of the clicks is of a value as it will generate more traffic to your site and that will eventually pay off ..

You said your link did not produce a backlink .. any link will be a backlink as far as I know but some of the backlinks might not show up in some of the sites which u are using .. it might show in others .. In addition some of the backlinks might take 2-3 months to show .. so I would not worry about it as far as it is from a good source or from a highly ranked site and it is not spamming

Yes, backlink works but one or two of them will not make that difference ..

Although it is more complex than that but to some extent you are right .. it is in one way or another dropping a link on another site .. whether the ppl click on it or not is irrelevant .. it will be a backlink anyway but when people click on it that will create traffic which is another important factor ..

Create a proper backlink building strategy (not spamming) and Keep on with it .. that will eventually pay off

The clicks don't really matter in terms of if its a backlink or not, its is a backlink as soon at you linked it to you website, the only thing that really makes it powerful are if its do follow and if its indexed my the major search engines. The higher the page rank or domain rank the more beneficial the Back link will be inless that has changed, there is always link-juice that is also an important part of keeping your rank,

I would recommend reading back linking guides to really have a full understanding or at least have basic understanding on them, because its not just a one time thing page rank and back linking is a battle for every website owner and we deals with it everyday.

One link from a single forum is not going to make any difference. Firstly, the links from most of the forums are no-follow and the rest which provide do-follow links they actually don't pass much link juice to get you ranked. My advice to you will be that try to build as much as textual links try guest blogging its the best for beginners.

What exactly do you mean by this? How do you measure this "not producing" part?

As others pointed out, it'll take some time for Google to index the backlink. However, forum links are in most cases nofollow as they should be. If you look at the page's HTML source, and find your link, does it have rel="nofollow" in the same tag?

If that's the case the link does not help your SEO efforts in any way.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

First of all you need back links from more than one blog, website and domains. Secondly you need a mixture of good quality and some low quality back links. The type of back links you really want is dofollow back links. So try to create back links from sites that give you dofollow back links.

As others have mentioned, the name of the game in backlinking is quantity and quality. I'd build up relationships with other bloggers writing about a similar subject matter to you, and after a while try to get them to link on their blogs to you by giving them an infographic to use or something like that. Hope this helps!

Basically you get the idea of getting backlinks. But you have to drop them in a lot of places to actually say that this method worked. Places where you can leave your links? Blogs, forums and directories. You can write guest posts and get them published on good blogs. They give good quality backlins.
