SEO Benefits of Forum Signatures - any?

Are there any SEO benefits to forum signatures?

I have been trying to find the answer to this question by searching the forums, but cannot find a conclusive answer.

I know things took a dramatic turn around during google updates and my observations are that many seasoned marketers no longer seem to use their signature file for back links etc.

I would be grateful if any SEO experts out there can confirm one way or the other.

I know you can get traffic from forums via your signature, but it is the SEO aspect I am concerned with.

Many thanks in advance for your input.

    Great question.

Google webmaster guidelines consider forum signature as link schemes which can negatively impact search ranking of a site:

Thanks for your response and link, but I think that Google is as usual being somewhat ambiguous with what they are saying and leaving their advice open to personal interpretation.

The following are examples of link schemes which can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results:

Forum comments with optimized links in the post or signature, for example:
      Thanks, that's great info!
      - Paul
paul's pizza san diego pizza best pizza san diego

The example they use is quite obviously a spam "comment" and I would expect them to clamp down on this type of behavior. But what about comments which give real answers and add value and with a normal less obviously optimized signature? .. are these being penalized too?

As I read through the guidelines, I interpret them to mean your signature file is okay as long as you don't try to spam. Am I right or wrong in my interpretation, or is google penalizing all...period?

And a great answer. Thanks, joydeepdam!

Forum signature links are also very typically nofollow, at least with big names such as WF. These links bring no direct SEO benefit.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.

I think these links works in some way. I saw few days ago test (unfortunately with google.pl) which showed that these links have some power.

Thanks for your interesting response, but can you confirm the WF signature is "no follow"

WF is nofollow, but why do so many people clog up this place with useless posts when they obviously are trying to get a backlink in their signature.
If WF did away with hyperlinked signatures, postings would probably drop 2/3 and that would be a good thing.

Yes. I'm not even sure why you'd ask. Just confirm it yourself.

They are still working as long as you are not spamming

They are devaluated now. Before you just had to spam with Xrumer or 10000 posts per day to rank. I don't think that they matter much. It does bring some juice in terms of SEO but if you combine them with other stuff like comments, social media links, bookmarks, wiki links, links in articles of related authority sites, etc.
