Local SEO Vs Normal SEO

This whole SEO arena can be confusing as hell.

Can I just study normal SEO (if there is such a thing, lol) and add a location after the keyword ("keyword" + "location") and that now makes it local SEO. Then chuck in a few local citations and I'm good to go?

I am not new to IM but new to this SEO stuff.

Is there any up to date Local SEO courses you could recommend?

Thanks in advance.

(I want to be able to rank local businesses for quality keywords in their area of operation)

Local seo is way easier compared to normal seo as you are targeting a specific town, city or area. That means fewer competitors.

    Yes, you can.

Keyword in title, variation of keyword in url, variation of keyword in text, city name in photo alt text. If you add a video with a name that includes the keyword or a variation you're a long way towards ranking.

Citations will not help a lot... Links from local sites or sites in your niche will.

Links from some other local business owner together with a supporting message, (example: a restaurant manager putting up on his site: Guys, dronehawk's insured our restaurant for ages. We're getting great coverage for a great price and the Drone's staff is really friendly. If you need business insurance, you can't go wrong with DroneHawk's Business INsurance Consortium, Inc. LLC. DDS) is even better.

Local SEO is much easier. I start with some citations, make sure the N.A.P (Name, Address and Phone number) are consistent on the website and across the internet. Do a crawl and find any old directories that are confusing the situation and either delete them or edit them.

Once this is sorted, make sure the Google Plus page is active, optimised (all business info is filled out, images, videos, links to website etc) and linked to the main website. From here user generated content is your best friend. Get your websites or clients to ask their customers for reviews. Obviously the reviews have a two fold approach, one for the reputation of the business online but two from a local SEO point of view as Google loves to see this stuff. Don't always try for all 5 star reviews though, it doesn't look natural if you have 50 5 star reviews. It's ok if you get the odd bad one, as long as you are seen to response in a timely and professional manner it can often carry more weight than a short 5 star review.

SEO (not local) there are many more pieces to the puzzle, KWR, website IA (Information Architecture), URL Structure, on page content, on page optimisation (title tags, meta tags), anchor text and internal linking structure, social signals, backlinks..... the list goes on.

Local SEO is pretty simple and doesn't require a large amount of ongoing work.

It depends what is your targeted market/audience. Local SEO often costs less than normal SEO, but it requires better re-search on keywords and local cultural specifics. However, if your product is online and your content is for example in english, you should use normal SEO to reach wider audiences. Moreover, I suggest you start from local seo and then expand, because to reach costumers in your local area will be much easier in the begining. good luck

Google wants to know that the businesses it lists in local search results are a part of the community, and are a good fit for its users.

You don't need many competitors to have a competitive keyword; you need a few good ones.

If you have a local business and looking for customers in a small radius of your location then you should go with Local SEO. For local SEO you have to list your business in local search directories online. With normal SEO, it is important to have separate landing pages for different locations that would appear in searches in that area. Google Trends is a program that will allow you to see how key phrases that could be useful to your business are ranking.
