Okay, so we all know that relavent and quality backlinks are important to increase position in SERPs and that it will take X number of quality backlinks to better your position, but my question is...what should I point the backlinks to?

Is it better to point backlinks to a static home page, or can I point the backlinks to multiple blog posts on my site, which the posts do not reside on my site's home page.

I know google likes sites with fresh content, but if it's better to backlink to a static page, how can I accomplish both?

I use 2/3 to the home page and 1/3 to other pages
within the site. I don't know if that is the best rule,
but it seems to work for me.

    That sounds about right.

You can use social bookmarking to create backlinks to blog posts.

You can use article marketing to create both backlinks to your homepage and blog posts since most article directories allow up to 3 url's.

Directory submissions, commenting on blogs, and posting/creating a profile in high PR forums are good ways of getting backlinks to the homepage.

Don't forget to submit your RSS feed to feed directories since this will create backlinks all around and help get your content indexed faster by Google.

I use a similar process to birddog200 but I also reverse it with 2/3 of links going to internal pages. The pages have a link back to the home page so the love gets shared around.

Right on! I usually do a even higher percentage 90/10. Most of your searchers will be ending up on interior pages anyway - might as well optimize for them.

You can get most links to main domain first, but you should get some deep links or you will never know when you trigger Google suspicious...

      Thank you all!

Let's say it will typically take 100 relevant, quality backlinks to earn top position in SERPs for my niche. Now is that 100 links to just one page, i.e. home page where the bulk of my info is hosted on, or does that mean 100 links spread out amongst many pages throughout my site?

Additionally...does google rank domain.com higher than domain.com/post-page/ for any specific reason?

I thought google frowned on this type of crosslinking?

MarkH45 - it sounds like you feel that the SERP ranking comes from quality PR backlinks to your home page; then get additional traffic from social bookmarking sites, and use AR to backlink to both home and internal links.

I'm wondering how many different internal page posts you link to.
