Hi

I've read that by being an author of a book that you can use this to boost your authority status, which I believe is a good signal to google that my content should be good, right?.

I've co-authored several books (actual books not e-books) and I display them on my wordpress portfolio page, but i'm not sure how best to "shout" about them to search engines to gain this advantage, any tips about the best places to mention them and link to them (from about us page, or homepage etc) most welcome?

What i'm really trying to understand is how Google can tell that i'm an author, for example can Google match my name on my website up against my name where displayed on Amazon?

Thanks

You're mixing two very different uses of the word "authority". If you write a book you may become the go to guy for that thing or phenomenon, but Google may not give a rodents behind about your achievement. People may want to interview you, or ask you to speak in events, or something else. That doesn't necessarily translate to SEO success.

However, you may be able to turn your publishing author status to a successful blog or profile site that people are happy to backlink. You may also get some very good backlinks from events or even magazines. The cumulative effect of backlinks is what we call "authority" in the SEO jargon.

I've authored several "real" books myself (technical topics). What nettiapina said about "two very different uses of the word authority" and "Google may not give a rodents behind about your achievement" is very true.

Writing a book might give you some authority - in your area of expertise in the real world, not with Google. I got one job with a quick interview and no programming test because the business owner knew of me and actually owned one of my books. There, writing a book carried some authority. As far as Google cares about my book writing? No. They aren't going to rank a site of mine, or a site that mentions me, higher because I wrote a book. It's meaningless to their ranking algorithms.

You're confusing Google with a human entity.

    Google doesn't comprehend quality.

Google does text association & grades followed link profiles.

OK, thanks for your replies guys. I have been trying to relocate where I read that and have found it. It was written by David Jenyns from Melbourne SEO, he said:

"Authorities author books - it's that simple. One of the quickest ways to leapfrog to
success and authority status is to write a book. When combined with the Authority
Content Methodology - your competition doesn't stand a chance."

I was just curious as to what other experts in the field thought and by the sounds of it not alot lol.

You can turn your real-world authority to good Google rankings, but it requires work. It certainly doesn't hurt if you've got "proof" that you're paid your dues and done research on the topic. Business bloggers and newspapers are much more likely to backlink an expert than some random dude.

I know a couple of local entrepreneurs who've taken this route. Can't really remember if their sites and companies were successful before the books came out - they probably were. However, it's at least feeding their success and increasing the opportunities.

It sounds to me that this Jenyns guy is trying to sell some kind of content writing method.
