Is making a review website best way to sell affiliate products?

Is making a review website best way to sell affiliate products or you can get the same conversions without writing reviews of products?
I know that you have to promote the product so reviews is a good way but does that mean these text or banner ads are useless?

    What do you mean by "review website"? The ones you see are usually useless piles of short articles that don't really review the product, but babble something and link to the product.

    There's a few problems with this approach:

    1) You can't even outrank the site that you're trying to sell for. You're selling the same product, but with inferior site.

    2) Google seems to be pretty good at finding thin content affiliate sites, and slapping penalties on them. Search the forum if you don't believe me. These sites don't help anyone so they're doing exactly what they should.

      So to be successful at affiliate marketing, writing product reviews would not help any conversion? So except email marketing what boosts your conversion rate?

        No, writing reviews can help... If done differently than the vast majority of review sites do.

        Can you buy the products you're going to review, use them, then write a review based on your own experience... preferably with proof that you used it (like a photo of you in your basement on your Schwin 470... Then, you're ahead of the game... If you also know how to write and know something about sports beyond the average person, your review sites on elliptical machines will be useful to visitors, therefore, will make you money.

        If you write something like:

        This is a review of the Schwin 470... The scwhin 470 is an excellent cardio machine because it allows you to do aerobic workouts from your very own home gym. It is better than Horizon's machines because it uses the latest in cardio machines technology...

        Then you copy the specs from amazon.com

        Then, your review site sucks and you won't make much money.

        I said nothing about conversion. My comment only dealt with SEO, and why review/affiliate sites are often problematic.

        If you write useful reviews that's probably one of the better methods for affiliate marketing. However, you didn't clarify what you mean by "review site". Is it thin content used as a thinly veiled mask for plastering a site full of affiliate links, or are you really reviewing the product in a way that's useful for visitors?

          Yes i mean being serious about writing review by actually buying and testing products, i really don't want to make a scammy site and start appreciating everything that i review instead build strong helpfull reviews, since i am in the 'how to make money online' niche i want to go for genuine products that can help people with making money online.
          Therefore i wanted to know that is it worth investing money in products for testing if i want to make money eventually from affiliate marketing on the website?

            I'm not in this niche, but I'm pretty sure that it's not an easy niche for this particular activity. Google one of the "make money" products. What do you see? I'm willing to bet that at least the more well-known products bring a lot of review affiliate sites in the first SERPs. Even the more clever ways like targeting "scam" and "problems" have often been taken over by affiliates.

            Research the competition and potential ranking keywords. That's all I can say. There's nothing wrong with your approach and the idea, but it's as old as affiliate marketing.

              Yeah you are right, the niche is horrible competitive and i am not the only kid in the block with that idea, popular products like 'google sniper' have hundred of reviews but what i found out was that at least 70% of the reviews are shitty and copied one's.

              The thing that got me in this niche was that it is a pretty lucrative and very well paying niche so i wanted to get into it, i guess i will have to put some unique angle to my product reviews that differentiates them as so far i am not having much luck by directly promoting affiliate products via ads and banners.

    The problem with most sites is as mentioned paper thin content and everything they review is awesome.

    Definitely!!! When I first started IM back in 2011, my most profitable sites were amazon review sites. I was even buying the $5 crap review articles and conversions were high. Then Panda and penguin came and they ALL got slapped. LOL. Then I greatly improved with my sites (review sites) contents especially with the top 10 products. And until today they are still making good money, easy to sell as well. But I found that it is taking more time to rank (top 3) them review sites this year compared to previous years. So I don’t make more review sites, instead I put more Top 10 products as categories/parent page and making child/supporting pages as individual product reviews. It works this way for me and people are buying.

    yes, I am doing a site assessment such products. highly competitive and prone to google for a kick if you copy from another assessment.
