There is one call SEO Context keyword tool. It analyze your keyword and recommends what best words to use for your content based on relevancy. I use it for all my content creation. Awesome tool.
With these, you don't need to analyze your competitors. Your keywords in your content is strong enough
to put you in a good page rank. But your still need to do some good On-Page SEO first.

I'm using/owning kwsuggest to spin up to 700 long tail keywords. The suggested ones by this site are taken from the actual google suggest bar and it's what people will most likely search for so the quality is pretty high. Hope it helps.

You can grab those keywords for free and analyse them inside keyword planner to see the CPC and estimated traffic.

Google Keyword Planner is a great choice. SERPWoo Keyword Finder is also good since it allows you to search for a kw phrase and then extracts long tail kw ideas from the top 10 pages that are ranking for that kw. Serpwoo also allows you to export the result data for further analysis.

My suggestion would be always better to use Google Keyword planner.
Its a better tool compared with other tools. More vital thing is that its absolutely free of cost.
SEMRush is another good tool for this purpose. but its need pro account to get all details.

    For Keyword research

The google keyword planner is a good tool to start with.. it provides both CPC and monthly search volume..

If your selling products then Amazon and Ebay will be good sources to perform keyword research on

I also like to analyze top ranking sites that rank for particular keywords inside of Google and then cross reference the text to find common words that are being used.

Semrush is a great source to find out all the keywords your competitors are ranking for plus more..

I also like looking at questions from yahoo answers etc

When wanting to know how easy or difficult it will be to rank for your keywords then it's important to analyze the competition. For this I usually concentrate on the top 10 ranking sites in Google.

If your looking for a tool that does all of this and much more...Then take a look at a tool called NicheGenetics

Keyword Research - Though there is a free keyword tool provided by Google, still many keyword tools are surviving by providing keyword analysis tools.

Anyway list of keyword research tools that I use:
    1. Google Keyword Tool - Obviously
    2. SEMrush - Paid (daily you can run 3-5 queries with limited data)
    3. Mondovo.com - Paid, but free version available. (uses semrush and gives all data without hiding. Ecommerce keywords, long tail, content ideas and all keyword you require from SEO to PPC)

Google keyword planner obviously, and I am also fond of using Google Trends to see the performance of trends which worked great in the same season of previous years. By using google trends you can timely integrate upcoming high quality keywords well ahead of the time and thus this practice can provide you with an edge
