How do you do on page SEO these days? Can you overdo it by over using a keyword? I optimize a page with a keyword in title tag, description, h1 tag, alt text for images etc. Good content length aswell, but no backlinking.

However one page might on page 1 for one keyword, and one might be lower than page 10 for another.

Both keywords don't have much competition either.

Seems impossible for me to understand how Google ranks pages!

How do you do on page SEO these days?
I started analysing the whole website manually, especially the homepage (Checking matches of Google 200 signals)or by using SEO review tools (I made my own tool MetricBuzz.com) that gives you the most required onsite edits for a website.

Can you overdo it by over using a keyword?
It's a vintage technique, Google bots can easily find you for over onsite optimization. It has no mercy to kick you out if you are not a brand. Of course Google staretd kicking out the brands.

    Meta Description
Google sets the description automatically from the website based on the search query when the Meta description tag is empty or not presented in the website. Also I can see many complaints that Google doesn't takes my Meta Title and description.

    Keyword optimization
You can target 5 keywords for 1 page. Take a read about keyword proximity, stuffing, prominence, frequncy, quality.

    How Google ranks Pages
Google takes many considerations in ranking a website/webpage (Google 200 signals) - It doesn't take all the 200 but it takes at least some of them.
You must also read how "Google search engine works".

  • Try adding your main keyword in the Title tags and couple of times in the Meta description. Publish the pages on Social media and specifically on G+. It's a great source to get a good PR as Google gives the priority to its database first and then the other sources. Write valuable contents for blogs and articles and try submitting the url with accurate keywords and description to various submission directories, it takes time but it is highly effective.

There are lot of important things along with these. You should focus on those too. Like- mobile firendly, user experience, W3C validation, CSS validation, publisher tag etc...

No it is not impossible to understand. The primary ranking factor in their search engine is still links. If you are not attracting and/or building any, your ranking results are not going to be very consistent.

When it comes to On-Page 80% of SEO's who are in this career or business fail to understand how it should be done.

On-Page Optimization plays a complicated component in getting good ranking in search engines unlike Off-Page where we just build quality backlinks...In an On-Page Optimization you'll need to have technical SEO skills and requires an advance/expert knowledge in html/css/php and must know how to use and apply those codes while considering many other aspects such as your content structure, content value, site structure, site speed, visitors interaction or whatever it's called.

If you're knowledge in On-Page only revolves around these following:
    1. Blog post title.
    2. Post permalink structure.
    3. Heading tags.
    4. Keyword density.
    5. Word count per post.
    6. Meta tags.
    7. Content interlinking.

Then you're one among the 80% of SEO's who fail in On-Page optimization most-likely your target keywords are failing in their rankings too.

Keyword density should not exceed 2% to be on the safe side to avoid over optimization.
Url structure, meta tags, title, alt tags, site speed are what determines your on page seo nowadays.

It's obvious these comments have not been tested and just someone repeating a myth or a general rule

In some niches and keywords this still works(hush)

I rank for many keywords top 3 many times taking 3-4 spots in top 10 intentionally for keyword stuffing to test out the algorithm

every niche, every keyword set has a different set of rules and you don't know until you test this out

test, test and test some more you will be surprised what you will learn instead of listening to people repeating other people

The folks above have given you good advice, just wanted to add this for you:

If you are using Wordpress you can over-optimize very easily if you use tags or categories with your main keyword in them. Setup is crucial because the way Wordpress is setup by default you can shoot yourself in the foot by just setting up your categories and tags incorrectly. I've had success using LSI words for category names so that the pages or posts that I want to rank for don't necessarily have the keyword in them (in the category of tag names), this prevents over-optimization.

Here's a link to an LSI phrase/wordgenerator: LSIGraph: LSI Keyword Generator

Do a test post and then open the source code and check your code for over optimization using either Ctrl+F for your keywords or use an online keyword density too like this one: Free Keyword Density Analyzer Tool

Hope this helps you out :-)

    Peace,
    EJ Lear

PS: I'm not affiliated with the sites above, just use their tools.

That's the whole idea that Google doesn't let us know how the rank things. They give us some information but there is a combination of over 200 factors, on-page is just a small part.

Question, how do you know the competition is low for these keywords, what are you basing that on?

    Basic on page covers:
    - URL Structure
    - Title Tag
    - H1 - H4 tags
    - Meta Description
    - Image Alt
    - Anchor Text
    - Internal Linking
    - Page Load Speed
    - Scheme Mark Up
    - Image Optimisation (compress file size)
    - Content Quality (length, UX with time on site, social shares, mixed media with video, audio, graphics, text etc).

The list goes on and on, then you have all the other aspects with off page. On top of that you have no control over what your competition are doing and only partial access to what they are really doing.

Don't use same keyword again and again, try to use some variations in your meta keywords and description. It is true that on-page is not just about metas, lost of other things are involve in this method such as URL structure, breadcrumb, images optimization, alt tags, internal linking, user-friendly contact form and more.

Google hates repeated use of the same keywords. So avoid spamming and work with semantic terms instead. Google picks up synonyms and logically related 'sub-keyword'as quality content.

When doing hyperlinks, anchor text should also bear the relevant keywords for someone to click it away from. One way links are considered more valuable than reciprocal links.

Yes and permalink structure as well. For instance for domain.com/category/postname, be sure to have keywords in those category names and post titles in place to get it fully picked up by the search engine.

I think people just don't understand what keyword stuffing is. They think that repeating a keyword many times it's keyword stuffing.

If they understood that keyword stuffing is repeating a keyword stupidly, for no other reason that just to repeat, they'd stop this crap.

      Keyword... fat thighs.

Title: How Fat Thighs Got Mike in Trouble

I hate fat thighs, Mike says.
Why do you hate fat thighs, Jillian asks.
What? Doesn't everybody hate fat thighs?
You're an idiot, Jillian said. I hate you. And she walked her fat thighs out of the room; went directly to her attorney to start divorce proceedings against Mike.
You're divorcing him just because he hates fat thighs, Jillian's attorney asked. Isn't that kind of... and he shook his head.

I do believe the keyword density is quite high but there's no keyword stuffing.

      Keyword:
      losing weight fast.

Losing weight fast is a difficult task especially for people who are not accustomed to losing weight fast because losing weight fast is not the same as losing weight; losing weight fast is a lot more difficult.

      I rest my case.

Repeating keywords in full context may not do much harm in general though that can sound pretty stupid to a reader if they are repeated too much, but I was replying to the OP on his concerns on title tag, description, h1,2,3, etc, or other SEO plugin keyword and tagging function for that matter.

Repeating "fat thighs" like a broken record in the limited characters given or encouraged in those codings is like firing all of your arrows at that one soldier when the rest of his troop are coming at you. That is a suicidal warrior.

Simple, clean On Page SEO is the key.

Meta Titles should be 3 - 4 keywords
Description should include 3 or 4 keywords
H1 tag with same 3 or 4 keywords
Content should be 2000 words or more.

Do this and you'll have a strong chance of ranking.

I personally don't believe in that. There are many sites ranking for articles of 500-800 words. Some subjects are just not that broad to write 2k words about them.
