URL Optimization question

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and looking forward to learning and sharing with everyone here. I'm usually on the other side of these forums answering all the questions, so it's refreshing not knowing any of this.

Is their any ranking difference for these two types of URL's, and if so which one is better?

1) http://mysite.com/product1/

2) http://mysite.com/product1.html

Meaning, is it better to have a product page in it's own directory, or just list it from the domain root as an html page.

Something like this I'm sure has been asked and answered before, but I couldn't find anything.

    • I've had more than one person tell me it does, and I've heard so much conflicting information so that's why I asked. I've had more people tell me, and articles that I've read that it does matter, than others that say it doesn't.

      Do you have any articles or information you could refer me to that explains why it doesn't matter?

  • Those two types do not matter.. What would really make a difference would be something like this:
    domain.com/product-id/18347239.html
    as opposed to
    domain.com/product-name.html

    if you've got the product name in both url's it won't matter that much, especially since both are just one directory deep. If the URL does not include the product name and instead is just a bunch of random numbers or something, that's when it can really make a difference.

    • Ok, thanks guys for the feedback. There's a lot of conflicting information out there, so it's hard to sift through what is good valid info and not.

      Is there an area of the site that recommends some books, training courses, and or article libraries about SEO?

      First off, of course there is URL optimization. Your keyword better be in that URL. It's silly and just wrong information to tell people that the URL doesn't matter.

      There is really not much of a difference the way you are describing it. The difference is when it comes to a PAGE vs a CATEGORY. You are better optimizing for the PAGE.
