Hey guys,

I'm completely new to SEO.... but can you tell me what's wrong with this?

I want to buy some aged Tumblr accounts or any web 2.0 accounts really.

I want to focus them on a business, for example Tom Jones Accountants and Tom Jones Accountants "+ city" or "review"

I want to create 'fake' reviews and get them ranked. probably 3-5 at a time. They would probably be very easy to rank because we're talking about an accountant in a small city here, and just for the company name.

Then I'd rent/ sell them the blogs so they can control their reputation online and the space around their site.

What am i missing? Because It's near enough FREE and quick to rank

You are missing the 'free' part = trouble. They can run into legal problems like you won't believe. That's fake advertising. In the USA, that's a big no-no.

    How is it False advertising?

All they need to do is take the blog posts and put a genuine positive testimonial there, all we do is control the space?

I'm from the UK so I'm struggling to understand why it's a problem

You left out the part about taking down the false reviews. You make it sound like you're selling them fake reviews that sell.

      But:

When they take down the blog posts and put a genuine positive testimonial, what happens to the ranking?

But, I gave you my reaction as a business owner:
You said fake reviews and I don't want to be associated with fake reviews.

If you're going to rank something, why not rank some other type of content, the kind that they can keep as is?

Reviews and testimonials can be VERY tricky business. And the laws vary from state to state in the U.S. I used to be the marketing manager for a national healthcare chain, and if we ran ads with testimonials, it quickly became a near nightmare. For some states, for example, we had to include the first name and last initial of the testimonial giver in the advertisement, and the original of their signed, handwritten or typed testimonial, plus a permission/release form had to be on file and available for viewing ON DEMAND by customers or government agencies at one office in that state. So if we had a good testimonial, we could only use it in one of the states that had such requirements, since the original had to be on file within the state. Other states were OK with a copy of the original, as long as the original was still held by one of our offices. Sure, some huge companies out there are using fake reviews, but if they themselves are not publishing them, that gives them a "get out of jail free" card, since it is technically out of their control. But once they DO control the website, mailer, or whatever, they are 100% responsible for the content.
