Ranking at the top place is much more harder. It's simple man!
BTW, it totally depends on the keyword and it's major competitors.

Trying to please Google by trying to write and SEO to satisfy Google... today. When what satisfies Google today, might not satisfy Google tomorrow. Instead, focus on writing great, helptful content, putting it in front of your target, and let Google do with it what it will. To my knowledge, Google has yet to penalize sites that consistently put out great content.

Just put quality content and all articles must be in one theme or related to each other. Make it more than 500 words and get high quality backlinks. Aim your content to be viral and you're on the go.

I prefer to use youtube keyword ranking to gain the first page on google. The biggest challenge is to rank with less than 3 words of main keyword.

The biggest challenge is the sandbox thing for new sites in some niches.

My biggest challenge is deciding which of the competitions dreams I want to crush first.

If you are ranking locally or medium/long tailed keywords, it doesn't take you too much effort and time in ranking on the first page of Google or the top spot. Simply ensure that your on-page SEO is done well.
    • Targeted keywords placed first in title, H1, meta description, URL hyperlink
    • Insert links to authoritative websites on your anchor texts
    • Add A Youtube Video related to your topic (Google Loves it)
    • Use LSI keywords pertaining to your topic. Try to ensure 0.5% keyword density of your targeted keyword
    • Internal Page Linking

You probably just need to buy a few good metric PBNs and link to your website. It probably won't take long to rank.

On the other hand, the biggest challenge I find for keyword ranking will be ranking for short-tailed keywords (usually one word or two-word phrase). This tends to be more competitive where all the authoritative websites are on the top results for first page of Google.

To dominate the top few spots for such a competitive keyword, I feel depth of content is very important. Probably a blog post of 1500 words or more. The content must be of value to readers so that they tend to share with their friends.

To find such viral content, you can simply head over to buzzsumo.com and type in the topic you want to write about. Take a look at the content of the best shared websites and think of something that will bring more value to your readers.

Once you have prepared an awesome content, you should contact authoritative websites that may be interested to share your content with their readers. Most of the time, they will be glad to place a link on their websites which brings tons of valuable link juice to push your website on the top spot of a competitive keyword.

    Just my two cents worth!

The biggest challenge is doing the SEO of your website correctly in order to please search engines. There are many different factors determining whether a website can get to the front page, you have to take all of this into account.
