Long tail keywords, how to find good ones?

I recently started a magazine about travelling in Thailand. I was trying to search for long tail keywords to rank for with some tools like google keyword planner and long tail pro.

So because my magazine is about travelling/holiday and Thailand, all long tail keyword suggestions are 'cheap holidays thailand', 'all inclusive holidays thailand', 'cheap flights to bkk' and so on. Everything is related to tours, tickets and cheap holidays.

My magazine is actually much broader than only cheap flights, all-inclusives and holidays. My focus is on places to visit, things to do, preparation tips, the islands and so on.

How can I find long tails for these keywords? Because whatever I try, all I get is suggestions for hotels, flights and cheap holidays.

  • Hi Jobjeeeee,

Sometime we not able to find our desire keywords and hence I am taking keywords with two phrase. Must with high volume and lower competition. I am sure this practice will become helpful to you.

    Regards,
  • Use google suggest and then copy the suggest keyword to google keyword planner to find out the best longtail keyword for your site

    • Google suggest is a good one and so are the suggestions from other search engines

Visit forums and look at some common topics.. visit question sites such as yahoo answers and find some common questions etc...

There are many ways to find long tail keywords and if you want to save time then look for software that does this for you..

  • There is an application called LongTail Keyword Pro. It will do exactly what you want and also tell you how much competition you will have to fight in order to rank #1 for those keywords. I wish I had an affiliate link

  • Using Google Keyword Planner tool will NOT help you with this, it will only give you ideas to use as Long Tail keywords, but you will not be able to SEO these terms successfully as you will not know how much competition you have for each set of keywords. You could be wasting your time if you don't check the competition.
  • I always use Google Adwords Keyword tool for this... Also if you have the option to include Analytics be sure to check WHICH keywords your visitors are looked for
  • I use Google suggest, longtail pro and keyword planner

I highly suggest SEMRush, but there's no built in feature that feeds you a list of low competition keywords. It takes some skill, ability to use spreadsheets, and time. Jaaxy Pro/Enterprise is cool as well, but the difficulty feature in Jaaxy uses BS metrics. Again, with some skill and time, it really helps to get ideas for unique titles quickly.

So what I usually do is locate my target keywords in SEMRush and then use Jaaxy to come up with unique titles in a way where there's a bunch of related "overlapping longtails" in the title tag. The goal here is to try to rank on a keyword that is somewhat competitive for the site while picking up easy rankings on super low comp/no comp keywords.
