      Alexa sucks.

Alexa only counts traffic that has their apps installed.

      [Alexa - About Us]
      Our Data

Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of over 25,000 different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

Alexa can not show actual ranking of any site it just show a lump sum strategy about traffic.

It depends on the specific website.. If you can add Analytics, it would be perfect.. Otherwise as yukon suggested, you can check the traffic logs.. Otherwise I am pretty sure there should be a widget that would allow you to check such statistics!

If you are using WordPress as backend, a good free plugin will be NewStatPress.. just use the search function in the Add a New Plugin portion of your backend..

StatCounter.com also has a plugin for WordPress, and you may install this via editing HTML (hard-coding) if you are not using WordPress.

It is a good strategy to use more than 1 tracker.

For your PBN definitely stay away from anything related to Google, especially analytics.

The people suggesting that in this thread obviously do not own a private blog network.

I suppose you are looking for a cheap way to track your visitors. Maybe try a more affordable split testing tool like Visual website optimizer or optimizely.

They should allow you to track general sitewide visitors. Although you would probably be sacrificing specific data like organic visitors vs. referrals, etc.

You can also use your web host cpanel visitor stats. While not the most accurate they should be able to give you a general idea of your traffic counts.

Piwik.org is a free open source analytics tool you might want to consider as well.

Google Anayltics. Others will often give you different numbers. I've heard it's best to average from two or three sources but I find it's best to just go with the authority, Google. Nobody will argue with Google's numbers anyways.

I suggest using Google Analyctics(sorry if that's spelled wrong) or StatCounter. I have used both, never had any issues, and recommend them to others. As for Alexa, I wouldn't use it. I don't think that they will be very accurate in what you are looking for.

Method 1 of 3: Monitoring Traffic from Your Own Website
      1
Access your webpage statistics. If you're using a platform like WordPress, it's very easy to access your site's stats. These features come built into the web platform for easy tracking and maintenance, and will give you an accurate picture of your webpage's traffic.
      2
Check the number of blog post comments. One easy and free way to get a ballpark idea of how many people visit your site is to check how many people leave comments. Obviously, not everyone who visits your website will leave comments. But on average, about one in every 200 readers leaves a comment, and knowing that statistic can help you to broadly estimate your website traffic
      3
Go to your homepage's video section. If you embedded YouTube or Vimeo in your website, all you need to do is go to a video and click to play it. Both YouTube and Vimeo will show how many views your video received, but only if the videos are publicly shared. If they aren't, you won't be able to see how much traffic was flowing through the site

As others have said, don't use Google Analytics on PBN sites.

If you're using Wordpress for your sites you can add a Text widget to the sidebar and paste your tracking code there. Then it will track every page. Works for StatCounter, should work for most tracking methods. And it won't get overwritten on Wordpress updates.

You can use google analytics to track your website traffic details. But make sure that your anaytics have no referral spams. You can block spam referrals using filters. Apart from google analytics, third party tools such as woopra and hot jar are also used to track traffic.

Maybe I'm oldschool but, I got used to looking at the raw server logs and using a tool to process them. I never really saw the need for more software to do what the server already does. Plus the log files might indicate potential security issues or other site issues. I always thought the counters / analytic services were just a trick to get you to see their ads. Granted google analytics has some pretty cool features like goals, which is pretty much the only reason I use it on a few sites.

You can't be serious, Alexa is a borderline useless. I don't think you understand how Alexa works.

      As far as PBNs go:
If you want to use GA for a PNB you can but I would suggest you have a strict rule of never ever connecting to your PNB site(s) or your GA account(s) without first either switching to a dedicated proxy for that site or at the very least using a VPN and keeping the regions unique to each site.

For example Awstats, is an application server side and is more concise and easier to analytics, in my opinion are both valid.
