Surely you have some idea of what you're trying to accomplish.

I'm guessing when you walk into a grocery store you have an idea what you would like to buy before you leave the house. Same applies to keyword research.

after I have decided to pursue a particular niche or kw set, its a pretty simple but efficient process from there...

1.) use Spyfu to gain insight on what main competitor's sites are ranking for (keywords they use)

    2) grab top 10 kw from comp list & plug into UberSuggest.org or KeywordShitter.com to gain access to your long tails, etc.

    3. Plug them ALL into adwords kw planner & sort by monthly search amount - analyze info and take some quick notes on the best & most unique way to use these kw's in articles, etc.

    4. Get to work!

I use Market Samurai to find keywords. It's an in-depth program that allows you to type in a base keyword phrase and then it will take that phrase and show all of the similar keywords for it.

Then, you can analyze each of those phrases to determine the potential traffic, along with competition.

That's just the basics of what this program can do. It's the best one available for keyword research in my opinion.

I laughed so hard I spit all over my monitor when I saw KS.
Who ever thought up that domain name is amazing.

Tip: you can save KS to your computer and use it without going to the site.

If you're going to use tools like those, I highly suggest you "poop" the keywords into a spreadsheet, heavily filter it, and then have a way to bulk check difficulty and searches.

Edit: Seriously that thing is hilarious. It's actually pooping out so much data I think it's kinda pointless. But if you ever over optimize an anchor text ever again you are a baddie.

Edit2: I deleted the sheet, even after some filtering I still had 4000 keywords, that's a bit much.

For adsense, you need both. High CPC, High search volume means high competition. So you need to research more when you are selecting your niche and keywords for adsense or any other business. Because if you cant rank it because of high competition then it has no value for you.

That's not how that works. The CPC in the planner is for ads on google, not the publisher network, same goes for the competition metric in the planner. You calculate eCPM by creating an ad and then just deleting it. What you said is generally true, but don't think you're going to earn 68% of $54.09 a click if your site is about car insurance. You can dig through the display planner to figure this out but I can guarantee you, it won't be anywhere near $54.09.

I was talking about the general things only. You are right and i knew that the data for the adviser not actual for the publisher. Publishers are paid based on eCPM. It is the value by calculating the ad revenue of a banner divided by the number of ad impressions that banner has acquired in units of 1000. So its way behind the CPC we are seeing. As i understand OP just asked the general question. But you are absolutely right in your point.

No wonder you're confused, you think CPC has something to do with organic SEO. It doesn't.

search volume does nothing for you these days it's the biggest misleading metric
unless you know who populates the top ten and also if the keyword generates tire kickers or buyers

competitors is for adwords has nothing to do with who is listed in the top ten listings

unfortunately keyword planner in my opinion is best used these days for keyword generation and start using some of the other metrics provided by third party providers for web listing info

        it's all we have

Google is not going to let you know anymore info that what it provides geared toward paying ad customers

actually I also a bit " suspect " those volume is it real or the data is out dated.....

since most of us use it to search key words volume , in fact 3rd party ones also link with it.

I open and compare , key in same keywords

both reply the same volume search from google key word planner and 3rd party ones.

I dont know about others here's how i work

Step1 : Collect information about business . Think like customer which term/phrase you will use to find services/product required.

Step 2 : Now you have rough idea. Check these keywords/phrase on search engine. Mostly clients want to rank their website on Google.

Check your competition in First page of google. Are they big brands or popular companies with reputation ? This will give you an idea how tough it will be to rank for this keyword.

Step 3: Now check those keywords you found useful in Google keyword Planner.

If you are doing local seo.. Add region name For eg : Cookeville web design , IT Consulting Tennessee.

Google keyword planner and Wordstream (paid) would be perfect for that. I prefer the former.
