If you only have an English version, it's a nonissue.
You point to something that's not there.

The internet world, for the most part, runs in English.

If you are really, really targeting people using other languages,
it's up to you to create different versions.

Actually the language tag can also be used to help GEO target countries.

Example, there's an hreflang English tag that targets Canada (hreflang="en-ca"), same goes for Australia (hreflang="en-au").

Perhaps your site is confusing as far as targeting.

The country code does not specify language.

Perhaps you are using that, and google thinks you should
have multiple versions in various languages.

But you don't. So the hreflang is useless. It would do nothing
      on your site.

I can tell people to go get some caviar from my fridge all
day long. But me telling people to go and get it does not
make it appear. If I have no caviar, people will open the
      fridge and think I'm nuts.

Use hreflang for language and regional URLs

Many websites serve users from around the world with content translated or targeted to users in a certain region. Google uses the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" attributes to serve the correct language or regional URL in Search results.
