Ranking with internal links alone

So I have been examining several larger websites that are ranking well for competitive keywords. A few of these sites are less then 2 years old, seems they have little to no external back links but they are doing well. It appears they are using the silo structure and then linking heavily back to their money pages. So my thought is, if you have enough pages, 300+ pages all linking internally properly, can you rank in time maximizing your link juice on your own site? It seems sites that are doing this same method with only 40-50 pages are not ranking that well which makes me wonder if its all about larger volume of pages to achieve this? I also realize without external back links its going to take longer. Basically a smaller version of Wikipedia.

  • NO!. Internal linking will never if there is some link juice to pass, when there are no backlinks there is no juice coming in to flow.

The website has most likely backlinks to its domain or other pages.

No, that's not happening. You have to have external backlinks, authority has to originate from somewhere on the web.

Just because you don't see backlinks on 3rd party link data doesn't mean a site doesn't have a backlink profile. They could have multiple domains that have established link profiles doing 301 redirects back to the money domain.

    • Makes sense, it just seemed the links they have no dot have any PR.

  • There is actually a spam tool out there that is doing this with some degree of success, but it is auto-creating sites with 30,000-40,000 pages and it is certainly a churn and burn kind of thing.

Doubtful they're ranking for anything competitive If all they're doing is building pages.

What's the game plan, build a bazillion pages targeting a bazillion longtails with weak competition & picking up positions #5 through #10 on the SERPs per each longtail?

      I hope it's fully automatic.

  • What I am seeing is guest blog links from multiple sites like forbes and other business websites, their anchor text is the brand rather then a keyword rich anchor.

...but is the Forbes backlink followed & is the Forbes page title/s or <h> tags keyword optimized for the money page.

Anchor-text isn't an end all solution, there's other ways to optimize for keyword relevancy.

  • You have to have external back links. Suppose you have a website 1 month old and have 0 external links and have over 1000 internal links. How your webmaster will generate keywords for you. When there is no reputation out there for your links in "WWW" no matter what frame work you are using external links helps in targeting keywords and many other things.
