Web Software with back links

Hey guys,

I've been mulling this question for a while.

I run a website, which provides Wordpress plugins amongst other stuff. For years I have given away software for free, with the price being an optional backlink to the site.

This has proven a successful strategy for a quite a long time, the site has quite good rankings on MOZ, Ahrefs etc. However I'm recently starting to become wary of the strategy ... because of course although I get a relatively good volume of backlinks - the sites are not always related, and sometimes may be spammy.

Your opinions - in today's SEO is this a good or a bad idea.

Your opinions please would be really helpful.

  • Does your plugin generate the backlink, or can the webmaster choose to place the link in an article? I think the former is something that might get you in trouble. However, even though generating links is sort of a link scheme some people have ran something like that for years.

    If you're providing a useful service and people are linking you because of that it should be ok.
  • The plugin per se generates the backlink, but there's an option to switch it off in the plugin parameters. Some people do leave it on, and that of course generates the backlink.

    The service the plugin is of course useful, and the plugin is also free.

    Just imagine the scenario of this forum using vBullettin to power the forum, and the forum links back to vBullettin because they are powered by Vbullettin.

    It's something along those lines.
