.com vs .rocks Does it even matter ?

Hi all

I have a 2-3 year old .rocks domain but I am wondering whether it's worth using it. I am still reading around how .com's are preferred even for seo purposes.

Does it really make a difference though? What I thought about doing was buying the .com version and redirecting it to the .rocks. That way, when .com ages, I can transfer everything to the .com version and redirect .rocks instead (if it's worth it).

Looking forward to hearing from you all soon

Aris

  • .com domain still best for seo purpose and professional use so it is better to go with .com domain.

Domain age is one of the least important factors. Aging doesn't bring you backlinks automatically, and those matter.

No. If you're targeting a country their local TLD is your best bet. Other than that the TLDs should not matter. Sites rank, not domain TLDs. Yes, people are probably going to trust .com more than some obscure humor TLD.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

I've seen credible tests show that the new gTLDs like .rocks not only rank just as well as .com's but convert just as well too, google has said that the new gTLDs will be treated the same as any other TLD and have just as much chance to rank given it's a quality site.

I've seen tests that show a gTLD beating the exact match .com in a all things equal SEO test, for example a domain internetmarketing.rocks beat the domain internetmarketingrocks.com in a test for ranking the keyword "internet marketing rocks".

Google recently changed their company name to Alphabet and registered the domain http://www.abc.xyz as their new home which I think is a big testament to the future of gTLDs, when the biggest internet company that ever existed registers it's new home address on a new gTLD.

If I were you I would register the .com and squat it and re-direct it to protect from somebody else taking it, but would put all my focus and energy into building the .rocks domain into an authority, you will definitely stick out from the pack in what ever niche you're in as marketers are just starting to take up gTLDs.

  • the only advantage with .com is people trust it more since they recognize it more often.

Google the keyword spaceship, there's a .airforce (spaceship.airforce) TLD half way down the first page.

They have 2 pages indexed: site:spaceship.airforce

It depends what kind of location you target, like if you are targeting local business then local domain name is better. But like to suggest you to use .com domain

The thing that .com has the advantage due to popularity and easy to recognize but it is not the basis. Whether if it is .com or not it will depend on the website on how they engage with the target users.

I Don't see any reason for Google to now crawl .rocks domain name.

I think - What matter for Google is : your content and domain authority and finally backlink profile (if two sites having same DA) and the last if two websites having same DA with almost same back-link profile then only it checks for domain age.

    Hope it helps

    Thanks
