Improving your business' ranking in a different city

Hi everyone,

I have a question which I hope someone might have some insight on - since after a bit of research, I was unable to find an adequate answer.

Let's say Company A has an established business in city A and ranks fairly well on Google for that city with its current domain A. It has purchased another domain (domain B) "www.businesscityB.com" because it wants to start ranking better for City B queries for its products (it wants to start selling more to that city).

Currently domain B simply does a redirect to domain A. Is it advisable that they start developing content in domain B, or simply leave it to continue doing a 301 redirect? Please keep in mind that company A does have a brick and mortar address in city B too, but listed on domain A. It has only purchased domain B with city B in its URL.

Thanks in advance for all the great insights and recommendations!
Cheers,

I would have everything on one domain. On the main domain I would then have locations and a page for each city. Next to that, if you have a physical location in both cities then you really need to get your Google My Business page sorted for both locations and link them to the relevant location pages on your site. Once claimed and optimising get some reviews in both locations. Make sure the location pages on the main domain are written with the location in mind rather than just spinning on page and swapping out the city location.

In this scenario, though, the URL for domain B has the exact keywords that people search for in City B. That company wants to leverage having that exact keyword in "www.product+cityB.com", though the domain B only redirects to domain A currently.

So if we keep it all under domain A, and only add a page for City B, the company will lose out on that URL with the valuable keyword. Or are you saying that, SEO-wise, it is still better to just keep it all under one domain because Domain A has higher domain authority than domain B?

Absolutely, and then make references from A to B and vise versa
