This is the second time this has happened with one of my sites. Google indexes a couple of subpages but not the main index page. Can anyone tell me why?

Not feeling the Google love.

  • Use H1 tag for your main page.. May be this will solve your problem.. Orelse if you are using wordpress all in one seo then check that ur targeting same keyword for 2 pages including ur homepage this may create a confusion in google bots..
  • This has happened to me a few times lately with brand new sites too. A few suggestions that may help...

    1) Submit a sitemap through google webmaster tools
    2) Submit the main index page to a few social bookmarking sites (especially Digg and Mixx)
    3) Be patient. Give it a week or two and the main page will be indexed on its own as google begins to come back to your site more regularly
  • Thanks, but done all of this already....
  • How about this guys...

    1. Google has indexed all my pages.
    2. It became # 7 in Googles first page for my keywords.
    3. 3 days later, it nosedived to #300+.
    4. On checking, all pages are still indexed.

The site btw is ~14 days old by now. Have I been penalized for something?
  • Mine did the exact same thing. Literally. #7 for 3 days and then tanked.

  • Maybe because you have similar title and Meta for all pages, have you checked that?

    • Hey! My meta (description) for each page does have content redundant content! Does that affect ranking seriously?

My title tags contain 'Page1 Title |Site Main Keyphrase', 'Page2 Title | Site Main Keyphrase' | 'Page3..... Do I change this pattern too?

      OMG, thanks buddy.
  • I have heard many theories just lately about Google and also Youtube, I ever had one gentleman from Australia attempting to convince me that google and youtube had hired someone to wipe us out lol

  • Lol. There can be a lot of reasons why that has happened. How old the site is, if you have any major seo pitfalls in your code on the index page. I have to assume your site isn't all flash or built within frames? Here's what you should do if you haven't already, upload an XML sitemap to the root ftp directory of your website. sitemapdoc does a really quick google xml sitemap you just type in the url and copy and paste it into sitemap.xml and upload it to the root ftp directory. Also, another thing you should make sure you do is build a few good links to the home page so google will find your page from other websites, try adding a link or two from craigslist, usfreeads, ezinearticles (write an article and put it in the resource box), amazines.com, goarticles.com, prlog.com, all are good for both pagerank and indexing (except craigslist doesn't pass PR as far as I know).

    Best of luck!
  • Already did all the sitemap stuff, backlinks, submitting articles etc. etc. On the site that tanked, I asked Google to reconsider. They did and Viola. Site is back on the first page of Google.
  • I am sure, bookmarking your homepage will help you for fast indexing as well as try to get backlinks from good PR pages. That too will help you to get fast indexing, also, google will give you an authority and will visit you often.
  • Your trust rank is not there for the new site.

Just keep on building High PR backlinks, it will be back and rank high in weeks...

Write great content (not too fast, max 2 post a day), do backlinks and in 1 or 2 months, you will see a lot of traffic flooding in, SEO takes time, just do it patiently.
