changing a webage name

Hi,

I have a bit of dilemma.

when i first started my website for my business (4 years ago) i didn't know much about SEO.

4 years on it's clear that key word in your sub pages still rank better in google than non-key word url.

One of my pages on my site does not have the keyword I now need to get into the top 10 serps and i think this is what is stopping it being higher. the other sites that sit top 10 have the key word in the subpage url.

My question...

I was thinking about just re-naming the page to have the keyword in it and using that.

Now i know this will cause problems with back links but to be honest i don't think those back links are doing much for me in the way of serps.

Is this as easy as it sounds or do i need to do anything more?

If you rename the URL, do a 301 redirect of the old URL to the new URL. Make sure all internal links are changed to the new URL. If there are any external links that you can change, then do it.

Do that, and you should be fine.

      Thanks!

What do I need to do in the 301 re-direct? is it simply adding a line in the htaccess

If you are using Wordpress, there is a free plugin that will do a 301 re-direct.

      Hi Amber,

      No i'm not using wordpress.

      I'm using a html template.

I'm hosting it on hostgator and noticed in my host gator c panel i have option for re-directs.

would this alter htaccess file in the root and cause problems?

I am using Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin. If you go to add new under plugins, and search for keyword page redirect you'll see plugins (including Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin) that will do it.

I'm thinking the Wild Card Direct needs to be checked also?

    "
    What Is a Wildcard Redirect?

Wildcard redirect is a specific redirect type that allows you to redirect all files within a directory to the identical filenames in the new directory or domain. For example, if you create a wildcard redirect to redirect domain1.com to domain2.com, when a visitor tries to access domain1.com/picture.png will be redirected to domain2.com/picture.png . "

Right iv'e done this with a 301 redirect from hostgator but when it's being redirected the .html file extension is showing! but when viewing the page on the site the HTML is not there which is what i want and all the pages have it's just this new one that shows .html at the end.

here is what host gator has added to my ht.access has in it now.

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^p--------g\.co\.uk$ [OR]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.p--------g\.co\.uk$
    RewriteRule ^hair\-reduction\-ipl\/?(.*)$ "http\:\/\/www\.p--------g\.co\.uk\/dfs\-l???r\-???r\-r????l$1" [R=301,L]
