The basics haven't changed for SEO:
    • Followed links from authority webpages.
    • Plain text.

SEO has CHANGED a lot for the 5 years, you can search Google panda and Google Penguin update. To rank nowadays you need a private blog network that is very strong with keyword diversity. And tons of backlinks as tier 2,3 to link to your private blog network links.

It's only changed for obvious spam, 58,000 profile links in a week obviously isn't normal & easy to detect. That wasn't even SEO 9 years ago, it was weak PRn/a - PR0 junk.

After reviewing the SEO for the site in your signature I have come to the following conclusion: You should not give advice about SEO to anybody, ever.

I was on your weebly reading "The Battle Over Udemy Coupon And How To Win It" and let me tell you, it was a really interesting article. Your tier 1 is obvious and low quality, your t2 is not human readable, and many of your links have OBLs in the thousands. I'm not kidding I looked at one link, it is followed, but it's comment #37,498 on some poor guy's blog from 8 years ago.

That's not even blackhat SEO, that's just spam, obviously it didn't help.

The main problem you're going to have is your "money site" is not really what google likes to rank. It's thousands of pages that have very little unique content. Your site is a black hole for rankings, I bet if I linked to it, my ranks would get sucked in and never be found again.

Search for Google Updates (Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird) and read in detail - SEO is much more detailed now- so no shortcuts!

      Hummingbird?

Now that was an epic update. So epic nobody noticed & wouldn't know about it today If Google hadn't said anything.

We already knew about contextual SEO years ago.

If you're into this site building stuff you may want to check Google's moves on mobile and responsive design. Just ignore anything that tells you that it's a major shift, and/or uses that stupid nickname "mobilegeddon". It's not that huge when it comes to rankings, but if you're building new sites there's really no excuse to not make them work on mobile.

As others pointed out, not much has actually changed. Spam controls are better than ever, but it's a gradual and ongoing development.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?
