Contact page vs mailto tag?

Hi all,

I've been asked to audit a website for SEO improvements and one of the big things I noticed was they don't have a contact page but they have a menu link called "contact us" which is using the "mailto:" tag.

My first reaction was to tell them to remove the mailto link and build a contact page, but I then asked myself why? I can't find any information or sources online that say that a contact page would improve overall SEO over a mailto link.

Please can someone point me in the right direction with a source if possible.

Thank you,

J.

It will make zero difference SEO-wise.

Where it will make a difference though is a contact page with a contact form ( with captcha) and no email address will get a lot less spam than they are probably getting right now.

So, why on earth would they ask you to audit a website for SEO improvements?

Sure, I could ask the mailman to look at my teeth. He might find
his way on some dental forum...

"I am a mailman and have been asked to look at a guy's teeth."
