Hey guys, this is my old site here: Computer Repair NYC
I had paid an SEO "guru" to do the work for me some years ago, at that time when he did the work I was getting a some calls after a while but then it stopped. I came across another guy who says he will do the same things the other guy has done but better which is:
  • Install and setup Yoast WordPress Plugin.
  • Keyword Research that best match your website.
  • Basic site SEO. Includes; site title, description and Meta keywords.
  • Optimize your homepage to increase your SEO score.
  • Speed up your website to reduce the loading time.
  • Install Google & Bing Webmaster tools for your website and adjust for best settings.
Looking at what was already done on my site, can anyone tell me please if hiring this new guy to do the above will help me get traffic or is there anything he mentioned above can be better than what's already been done on my site?

None of that list will rank a page on it's own.

I haven't looked, do you have any followed backlinks worthy of ranking a page?

I doubt it, as mentioned I had paid the guy to do the work originally so I am not aware of everything he had done in the backend. So your recommendation would be to leave the site as is and get quality backlinks done?

All those HTML <h2> tags are basically keyword stuffed & not focused on anything.

You do need someone that knows SEO to overhaul the site.

That is the problem in a nutshell! Everyone who has contacted me all say the very same things we or I "will get your site to rank on google within 3-6 months". I have paid a lot of money over the years to both companies and individuals who has made those claims and it never worked. So I have to get someone to do it but who? How can I know who would be the right person for this?

            Take it step-by-step.

            1) The first thing that needs to be done are things that you control, like cleaning up the old site. None of your pages are optimized for SEO. The quick glance I took screams spam (<h2> tags) & train wreck on broken internal links (404 errors).

            2) Once the site is cleaned up & optimized then start working on quality followed backlinks (has to be followed links (not optional)). DO NOT buy spam link packages.

            3) Next, you're targeting local keywords, so work on local citations.

Basically, 3 steps to ranking pages.

Seems like we're all posting at the same time. If I understand this correctly I will need a new site. If yes, I had been told a while back then whenever you have a new site, it takes months before the site can rank, is this correct?

Just overhaul the old domain. You can rebuild the site & keep the old domain name.

I looked at your backlinks, not much to write home about, not bad links but not good enough to rank any pages on your site either.

Without a doubt your pages need some serious help for SEO. You're spamming out all those <h2> tags.

Well you should change theme, and change the whole site around, for lead capture and shopping cart design, products, and more, just needs a lot, if you want things to be right.

You have a bunch of 404 errors considering the site is only 38 indexed pages.

    Change hxxp to http:

Oh I see, so it's more important that I keep the domain than the site itself. Alright, thanks for the list guys, I will work on those things and get back to this thread in the future. Just regarding followed backlinks, I am seeing sites offering this for sale on the net, is that how it's done, I mean "purchasing" backlinks?

Don't do that, never, never, do that.

You're a small local business that can't afford to keep starting over because of junk backlinks from random domains/pages filled with spam links. Those link packages are for disposable sites.

You need quailty links like I've already pointed out, quality is the key here for long term ranking on the SERPs.

Careful with those. Lying and deceptive practices are very common on this field. And I'm not even talking about the obvious "thousands of links for a fiver" type of crap. It's very typical to get a link on a new weak page.

If you're running a real company you should be able to come up with some potential link sources that aren't bought links. Partners, industry groups/associations, clients, business directories, etc.

I'm not sure if you should keep the old site, or overhaul it. Just remember that you need to have a development site if you're doing major changes such as trying a new theme. If you're testing stuff on the live site there's a change that you'll just confuse Google even more. Dev site doesn't need to be anything fancy, any cheap cPanel account will usually do.

Man, i am thinking to get new site entirely and make it more mobile friendly, I can get a cheap simple site at wix and use the advice give here. Some are telling me I don't need a fancy looking site for my purpose, just a basic site with proper effective layout and SEO optimized, would that be correct, if so, would a basic wix or Godaddy site work please?

NO NO NO NO NO NO ...

First, Wix sucks for SEO, last I checked they limit you on the basics. Godady is the worst, geez I can't stand those relentless upsells.

Rebuilding the site is very simple.

Hmnn, that means I will need to get an SEO person who knows Wordpress site who can follow the criteria's given here. So from what I am seeing I think my main hurdle will be to get [not purchase] quality backlinks but how to get those will be a major issue.

Any real SEO already knows Wordpress, it's very common & been around for years.

The site & citations aren't a big deal, just time consuming.

The site isn't even big (38 pages) though I would start over with fresh content & keywords that have been researched to determine if it's even practical to try & rank for a keyword depending on the budget. Example, ranking for pc repair new york might not be practical (budget) but the keyword pc repair service new york might be easier to rank (example).

There is some excellent advice above for you. As I think you are learning SEO is a lot like cutting your grass - it is great when first done but later it is not the same and needs to be done again. Yje problem with SEO is that things change over time and then there is a need for improvement.

Rather then focusing too much on SEO you many want to get involved with social media methods of promoting you local business.

With SM it's the same deal, many people contacting me to sell me thousands of likes for cheap and I am guessing just like purchasing backlinking that too is not recommended?

Those are fake Likes created by bots, so yea, useless. You'll never make a sale from bot traffic.

Alright so since I don't personally know any company with a quality site which will allow me to place a link on their site, is there anything I can do regarding backlinks? Also, if purchaseing facebook likes is not an option what are my options to advertise on FB only PPC?

And the other way around: any web developer worth his/her salt should know the basics of on-page SEO.

I'm not quite sure what's the thing you can learn in two or three weeks, but it sure isn't SEO or web development. Or to be more precise, it's not the advanced stuff in either field. Sure, you can learn the basics of SEO, and it's not a bad idea to do so in any case. If you've got a business to run I'd recommend that you do not try to tackle SEO or site building by yourself.

If you need just a basic website there's probably a decent site building tool you can use. I have no use for them, so can't really recommend anything except for the market leader in my home country (Finland). And that's probably not very useful to you.

However, if a basic site is what you want I'm not sure why you'd start from scratch. You've got that already. Your site may not be fancy, but I don't think it's a disaster either.

I'm pretty sure it's fairly hard to rank for computer repairs in my area, and the competition here is non-existent compared to US. SEO might just be the wrong game for you. I haven't done any market research so I can't say for sure, but I know a guy who's running a similar company around here. I've seen zero SEO effort from them so they're probably getting their clients some other way.

I have created a game plan based on everything I am finding here and elsewhere, would appreciate if you guys can first help me address and clarify the items with question marks please?

The first thing that needs to be done are things that you control, like cleaning up the old site.
1] The quick glance I took screams spam (<h2> tags) All those HTML <h2> tags are basically keyword stuffed & not focused on anything so replace with only focused keywords.

2] Fix all broken internal links (404 errors).

3] Next, you're targeting local keywords, so work on local citations. What does "local citations" mean exactly?

4] None of your pages are optimized for SEO so optimize "content" only?

5] Mobile friendly- Guy says site is already mobile friendly but can it be better? If yes, how?

6] Have a can't miss "clickable" phone number in big, bold text at the top and bottom of site?

7] Include an instant quote form? Since I already have a contact page I am not understanding what is meant by an "instant quote form"?

8] Once the site is cleaned up & optimized then start working on quality followed backlinks (has to be followed links (not optional)). DO NOT buy spam link packages.
