Wohoo! 9 Adsense clicks! And it made me...Wtf?

Hello guys. I've not been too much into this whole adsense thingy before.
That is, I have read a lot about it and have various products etc, and once I finally got an adsense site up and started getting several clicks, I found out it was virtually nothing to be made from that site.

Alright, it has potential, and I get consistent clicks, but yesterday I got 9 clicks from adsense, and it made me $0.04! - For 9 clicks!

How is that even possible? I got one click today, same site, for $0.05.

Does any of you adsense pro's have a good answer to this? It made me consider using adbrite or chitika instead, as the clicks I get from those is far better, and the website isn't very targeted or clickhappy, and I don't want too many ads on it.

Is it any way of changing the ads to show ads from more profitable keywords? As the traffic is pretty general anyways, so getting ads on higher paying keywords might boost the income a whole lot.

Or is it any other advertising networks that pays better than adsense in "general" niches?

Thanks,
Preben

P.S. I'm not mad or anything. Going from 3-4 clicks a week with adsense, to 9-20 a day is pretty nice!

Hmmm... Don't want to do that. The sites are pretty easy to make and get traffic to.
The one I'm talking about in this post took me one day to design, populate,AND promote!
So if it was any way to change the keywords that triggers the ads, that would be great.
The site gets 700-1000 visits every day, so I'm thinking about CPM advertising as well.

But getting higher paying adsense ads would be the best, as the visitors are general and not very click happy.

Since your traffic is general and not focused Google's smart pricing is giving you cents.
If your traffic sources will come from relevant places to your pages, you'll see more $.

What most people DON'T tell you about adsense is that it builds slowly.

Place your ads right and focus on the other sales and the adsense will increase with time. At first you may have some public service ads which don't pay at all.

Some tell you here that you put up a site with adsense and collect the money - that is bull. As your site improves (content/visitors) and ages the adsense will "grow up".

Thing is about this site... Adsense clicks started out pretty well, giving me 15-60 cents per click. Now it's barely anything.

As for the site itself, it's a set'n forget kind of site. I've had adsense for quite some time (A few years?), but never really focused on it, as affiliate offers make more money on my other sites.

Btw, people spend quite a lot of time on my site, and I guess google knows that if I both have adsense and analytics.

Anyways, I'll try to find some good cpa offers instead, or maybe clickbank products and test it up against the adsense income. If I only make 1 affiliate sale a month and it makes me $30, it's still better than making less than a dollar a day in adsense, as well as I can choose more relevant offers than the adsense ads I've gotten.

I'll let you know how it works when I try it Thanks for replies! Didn't know there was so much to be learned about adsense!

      Hi Preben,

Never put AdSense on a page that gets untargeted traffic. You may get smart priced which effects your whole AdSense account.

If you have a website that gets "pretty general" traffic, don't put AdSense on the pages that are receiving that traffic. Instead, place very specific in-text links to narrowly focused pages that target a very specific topic the relates well to someone who is in a buying mood.

You've got to remember the point of advertising is to sell something. Build the kind of page you would want to place your own ad on if you were selling an item.

Well yeah, but this kind of site is pretty easy to build, as well as get traffic to.

If that whole "smart pricing" thing affects my entire adsense account, I better skip it. I have other websites with adsense that gets $0.5-2.0 per click.

I'm also using chitika ads, and their linx module, with contextual advertising. Got 7 clicks for a total of $2, so it's currently way better than adsense.

And I'll switch the adsense for adbrite or something. As well as affiliate banners for attractive products.

Besides the statements about your site not being targeted, which is probably the issue here, it also matters where the traffic comes from.

IME, visitors from some of the social sites such as Stumble, can bring down your earnings per click in a hurry.

Because USUALLY, social media traffic has low conversion rate which brings your CTR down which leads to low paying ads.

Social traffic is essentially people sitting on their tush, bored, behind a computer monitor. Digg, Stumble, etc provide entertaining things for them to read. In the old days these same people would be found on the couch with a remote control in their hand.

Search traffic is good. Social traffic is next to worthless, they just aren't looking to buy anything. If you are trying to make money in adsense and are targeting social traffic you are wasting your time in a major way.

You sink your time building traffic that doesn't monetize when you could have spent the same amount of time building traffic that does.

Nobody goes to StumbleUpon hoping to find the worlds best dog training guide, they go to a search engine for that.

Probably the only way to make money in social traffic is to push ebooks on making money with social traffic.

      So you have two options:
      1. You are smart priced and that's why you are getting such a low rate for clicks.
      2. You have chosen a niche that doesn't have many adsense advertisers competing to drive the price of the clicks up.

      Your choices
      1. Figure out what site got you smart priced and remove your adsense. (if you are smart priced, clicks on all of your sites with adsense will have plummeted.)
      2. Stay in the niche and figure out how much traffic you need to drive at half a penny a click to pull out the ching you want.
      3. Stay in the nice, drop adense completely as a monetization option for this site at this time and find something else to push.

Of those options 1 and 3 are the ones worth pursuing. Other wise, 1000 visitors at a 20 percent click through, could net you close to a dollar.

in point 1, did you mean if i have 10 sites with low paying adsense clicks, i should remove adsense ads from them all?

No, try to figure out which one is tripping the smart pricing. This can be difficult, though the first site to try is the most recent one.

    Alright, thank you guys.
I'll remove the adsense completely, although I'm getting decent clicks from it now.

I removed only one of the banners, my ctr went down, but my clicks got more valuable.
I might experiment a bit with this, or simply remove it. Contextual advertising makes me a whole lot more than adsense, and I'll see if I find a good CPA banner to replace the adsense instead.

Thank you so much for your thougts! I had no clue adsense was this advanced. I use it in my blog too, where I have gotten clicks of over $2 each, and I don't want to ruin that!

My experience tells me that despite what Google says, entire sites and accounts do not get smartpriced. I think they say that to scare you into ALWAYS following the rules carefully and ALWAYS making quality sites. In my experience you get smartpriced for individual clicks. So if somebody clicks on your ad and realizes that they made a mistake and immediately hits the back button, you get almost no money -- maybe half a cent or one cent. But if the visitor clicks an ad, then browses the advertising site for a few minutes, you will get some real money (depends on the niche, but for low paying niches maybe 5 or 10 cents, maybe 20 it depends).

I don't know your sites but if you arrange the ads so that people will not know they are ads and mistakenly click on them, you will get a lot of smartpriced clicks.

Targeted Click through is no different when it comes to payment.

I have targeted traffic on my site but the ctr can be 2 cents for 1 click from an ip in Florida and then 22 cents for 1 click from another ip in Florida from the same ad.

I think we just have to settle for what google gives us or remove adsense altogether if your not happy with it.
