The end of link building via KickApps

Well, it was great while it lasted but it looks like kickapps owners are really starting to pile in the complaints. The next release will have the nofollow tag on all profile links which will make them next to useless.

8/13/2009 release complete

Thursday, August 13 2009, 04:14 PM by Matt The 8/13/2009 release was completed this morning, and the system is running smoothly. Please note: The addition of the nofollow attribute to all hyperlinks in the Links and RSS sections of the member profile page was postponed to our next release.
If more than 20% of your links are from kickapps sites, now would be a good time to go out and build more links so you don't lose your rankings when the nofollow tag is added.

I also found this comment by one of the developers interesting:

Thanks for the info. We'll investigate. We've actually found several other services in addition to SENuke that are generating spam on KickApps-powered sites and we're developing tools to shut them down. Caveat emptor for anyone investing in licensing these spam tools and services.

Hmmm...I and I just created my first set of accounts at over 500 of these sites.

Reading the community board it appears that the new roll-out is going to NoFollow the bloggroll links. Not so clear about in-line links for blog posts or images.

If it's bloggroll only, then scripts can be developed to fast-upload blog posts and images. If NoFollow goes site-wide, then the entire platform will be useless.

It's the tragedy of the commons all over.

It's like Tom Brite keeps saying over and over again...you need to find your own places like KickApps that you don't have to share with anyone else.

It's a "botique" social networking Script.

Anyone can install it on their own server and instantly have their own "social network" where members can share photos/video/blog posts/chat...etc.

It's like a mini-Facebook for your particular niche. So pretty much anyone can sign up and start getting links.

About half the sites that use is seem to have installed it on a subdomain on their own site while the other half just host it on Kickapps own server.

The problem is the AMOUNT of time. These sites got used up in less than 6 months.

Honestly it doesn't surprise me, I always kept an eye on kickapps sites to see what niches people were promoting and how they were ranking and more often then not people would join and put 10, 20, sometimes even as many 50 links back to different pages on their domains. Mix that abusive behavior in with the amount of people who get Angela's and Paul's backlinks as well as the amount of people who use senuke and the amount of people who sell senuke services and you've got a perfect storm brewing.

This is really bad news. Does this mean all the sites will be useless? I wonder in the Backlink goldmine WSO guy has seen this. TBH it doesn't surprise me, some of these sites are reporting 300-400 new members suddenly arriving within a few days, it's abit like angelas and pauls links.

I PM'd Steve about this so I'm sure he's aware.

Right now I'm working hard to get my favorite links out there an indexed before the NoFollow problem hits. I'll be moving on to something new as soon as my run is done as I can't trust this platform after this.

After the change, if we find that blog links/image links still are do-follow I'll return to it.

It is a really sad news for the guys who are using kickapps.
So, link builders & SEO Guys are going to get more work because of this, isn't it?
hm, in point of view of SEO guys it is good, but in the view of webmasters' it is sad.
However, Thank god, I am not using kickapps in my sites...

If people would backlink their profiles it would offset some of this. I give each site a bunch of social bookmarking links, pligg, etc. for their profile [100-200 links per site]

NoFollow on Profile links have been enacted and are love. I've checked a bunch of sites and it's the same in all of them.

Blog post links (and I'm guessing image links) are still live for now, but automating blog posts is still a bit tricky. I've been working on my own custom imacros based on the ones you can get from Fran Murray but it's turning out to be very hard to get them to work properly...at least for blog posts.

There are plenty of people on the dark side that are significantly smarter than I am and I'm sure they'll find they own way of automating these other elements soon until the developers nofollow them as well.

Unavoidable fact when the resources is abused too much by marketer - black and white.

I found a blog with a free script to submit to all these sites, I think this happens eventually....
