Every time I try to build manually a link on some edu websites, it is submitted to admin review and then ignored (or denied) (almost 98% of my links).

What is the best way to build quality .edu and .gov links?

Some one has a list of good .edu|.gov websites that accept easily link submissions.

Can you tell us what you are saying to these web admins? How are you pitching the idea of linking to your website? I get EDU links all the time

No, I don't ask admins for this, I just comment relevant posts (to my link) and wait for approval.

They do not answer to emails.

That's good. There are almost no sites owned by members here that any EDU or GOV site should consider linking to.

Just to save you some time, links on .edu and .gov sites do not carry any special value. You can stop trying to get them. There is nothing more special about them than links from any other equivalent webpages.

        That domain doesn't even exist.

Are you talking about some obscure subdomain under cmu.edu? I fail to see how that would help anyone.

If you want a true edu or gov backlink that is promised never to go away - build a relationship and value with the owner of the institution and try not to go about it with blackhat methods.

For example, I have a client that I'm working with and they're in the lighting industry - a highly competitive niche and they're doing very well. One of the things I'm working on, is building trust worthy backlinks with a few universities that they've done work with in the past.

By having a previous relationship, it's much easier for me to get in contact with the person that's in charge of moderating the website. My client has helped them in the past with a few projects where other competitors were not able to meet their expectations.

Because of this, the university is more open to allowing my client to be added as a "Partner" on the website.

The same can be said for a .gov link. If you provide a good value to a county or municipal city, you can build a relationship within your local community. You may not be able to be a "partner" per-sei with the local cities and counties - however (ahem) if you write quality articles that DO provide good value then you are more likely to have them quote you in a blog post that they write themselves. I've done this before and it works very well.

Most of them are moderated. I spend a lot of time finding good sources for articles and blog posts with links on .edu and .gov sites that are not moderated.

Run an accredited educational institution. That'd probably make it fairly easy to get links from government agencies and other schools.

Or partner with them on something as DannyVeiga suggested. The universities in my area seem to be proud to show their partnerships with companies, for example.

Not something you can do? Well, it's sort of fortunate that you've just been listening to the wrong kinds of "SEO experts". This isn't something that's required for your site to rank. Snake oil may be tempting, but it's not going to cure you. Just drop this nonsense, and stop listening to anyone who peddles this edu/gov crap.

And all that time would be completely wasted if you weren't selling these links to clueless marks. .edu and .gov TLD have no magical properties that would make low-quality blog links or new sub domains great.

Of course its not "magic" because its a .EDU. Its great because they are DA90+ domains with good content (research papers, study articles, etc.) instead of crap. They have a ton of onpage SEO factors ready to go that a random or new .com/.net/.org/.info doesn't. Its not better because it ends in .EDU its better because Harvard.edu is a much better/high authority domain than your-cat-wallpaper.info.

Sort of. If you're getting a link to, say, the institute's partners page that's linked in the main navi that's probably a very good link. However, most "edu links" are still crap for other reasons such as being spam on some obscure blog or being new sub domains under that .edu domain. They help as little as they do in any other scenario. The strong front page doesn't help if the linking page doesn't have any juice.

Your sig link seems to advertise sub domains. Does University of Notre Dame really link to your link sales page?

Entering this discussion late so I didn't get to see his sig before. But now I see he has no signature. Always interesting when someone is called out on a signature, and then said signature disappears. So, noble, can you fill us latecomers in on the story?

This is the link that noble had in his/her sig (was in my browser history).
