I have a website, i am not that pro of an SEO but the website got hit by a penalty not now but an year ago.

It was not a manual spam or anything in webmaster, The question i have is i did clear out all the links, but how long does it generally take to get back in the good searching books?
#penalty #removal #time

Unless, you have notification of a penalty in Google Webmaster Console, then you do not have a penalty.

What do you mean by 'clear out all the links'? Did you mean you have removed all the links or clean up your link profile? And when did you do it?

Oh, i had been reading articles, all of them suggested to dig into links if there was a sudden drop in traffic. the traffic fell from 2000 page views to 200 in a day. and there was matching google update on the day that happened.

i had so much spam links coming to my website. i had to remove them because they were spammy like weird domain names, etc.

but does that mean 100,000 links is better than 5000 quality links?

Yeah quality is always good then quantity that's true. To get your rankings back it can take some time even months. You are flagged by which algorithm can you say? Is it Panda or Penguin or something else? Which was the corresponding Google update that you said?

Its not necessary that you will get any notice for algorithmic penalty. generally notice is given for manual penalty not algorithmic. You can check by analyzing traffic data combined with algorithm release\update dates.

First check which algorithm hit you. Once you have information about algorithm then you can take actions to minimize the impact.

    Then try following:

    1. Check other search engines page ranking. This way you will be able to check if your site is penalized by google penalty or not.

    2. If you feel that its google penalty then optimize content for all of your posts. do proper SEO. Get rid of low quality content if any. This can help you in refreshing your data and any panda penalties.

    3. use any backlink checker tool and ask to remove those links or disavow links using google tool.

I see that is what i have been doing now. Most traffic came from Google as compared to other search engines. already disavowed links after contacting the websites.
