SEO Forum - LINK WHEELS: Which 10 Web2.0 Properties Should I Use To Make An Effective Link Wheel??

Hi All,

Over the last few days, I have read a few threads regarding the creation and use of "link wheels". Basically, link wheels are a grouping of Web2.0 pages (ie. Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, etc) linking to your main site/blog with the intend of giving it more backlinks (and therefore do better in the SERPS).

I would like to build a link wheel to help promote my latest blog.

Which ten web2.0 platforms should I use for my link wheel? This is going to take some time and effort, and I'd like to make sure that the results will be worth.

A secondary question would be on how best to interlink the web2.0 properties to my blog. ANy advice on that would be great too!

Thanks guys!

I've only used Squidoo, Hubpages, and another site I can't think of the name right now... 5 Squid Lenses, 5 Hubpages, and a page from whatever that site was. I did this about 2 months ago and I didn't think it was working, but yesterday actually I took a look at 2 terms I was trying to rank for and wham... I'm on the #2 spot for both terms.

These aren't highly searched terms though... They have a low search volume but the keywords themselves are what I call "Buyer Keywords." They're keywords that a buyer is more likely to type in.

So... This strategy at least worked with Squidoo, Hubpages, and some other random Web 2.0 property.

BTW, I also blasted 11 articles that linked to the Web 2.0 sites AND bookmarked both the articles and Web 2.0 pages. Apparently that's what Google likes right now...

I try to have at least two of the bigger ones (HubPages, Squidoo, Wordpress, Blogger, Tumblr) then I fill in the rest with random properties. I have a big list of 2.0 properties for those who need them.

    Hi Kate!

The ones I use are Blogsome, Xanga, Slideshare, tumblr, livejournal, wordpress.com, wetpaint, blogger, scribd and vox. These are the best for me, especially scribed and slideshare are Google's favorites right now (from what I have experienced from building the linkwheels).

Currently I use this "linkwheel" (it's not a typical linkwheel), but it has proven to work great for me:

      Ursa,

I noticed that in your link wheel, you don't use Squidoo. Now, many other marketers do use them.

I'm not a huge fan of Squidoo, so I'd rather not include them. What was your reasoning in not including them?

        Kate,

with my recent research, I have found that not many squidoo lenses (and hub pages) rank on top spots in google. However, when researching different markets, scribd, slideshare, blogger, tumblr, etc. rank high these days for longtail keywords. I try to look for websites that are currently google's favorites . Next week there may be completely different Web 2.0 properties ranking high and I will use those.

This is just my observation and I'm sure many others still have great results with squidoo and hub pages.

I know this thread is kinda old but I thought I would update some of this for anyone following this.

Xanga is no good. It forces all external links to be nofollow.
Scribd is coming down hard on uses like those talked about in this thread. They recently lost up to 50% of their traffic due to coming down on such uses but they are fine with that.

WordPress has gotten really, really strict on using blogs to promote sites as we are talking about on this thread. Absolutely zero tolerance they told me.

If anyone uses any of these make sure you back up your content and that they are not forcing nofollow on external links. Be prepared to be closed down if your blog is anything but a legitimate blog with unique content.

Livejournal is difficult to work with. A pain in the butt. Bad interface.

Weebly.com is good (do follow links and good TOS). Very simple interface.
vox.com is good (do follow links and good TOS)
tumblr.com is decent but very confusing to figure out how to use (do follow links and big but, okay TOS).

When I say good or okay TOS I mean that they don't say anything that could be taken as denying us the opportunity to create blogs for self-promotion.

      Still checking others...

      Carlos

I like to do it a little differently. For example, I use Ezine Articles, GoArticles, and a few of the other top article directories as a "hub" page which has links only to my money site/squeeze/landing pages.

I use broken link wheels to point to my top articles and pump them up and also make broken linkwheels that point to my money site pages directly, without any articles in it from the top 5-10 article sites. I do use some of the "crappier" or lower quality article directories as "fodder" or filler in places in some linkwheels, or simply as random backlinks.

I don't want to waste Ezine/GoArticles/ETC by using them to point anywhere except to my money site, where I can either make a sale/commission or funnel that traffic into my opt-in and build my lists. This way I don't waste any traffic, as if they sign up, I can put offers in front of them multiple times a month, instead of once if I had sent them directly to someone else's offer or something like that.

That's a really good idea. When I get that far with my web business, I definitely plan to make use of email marketing.

          Hi..

I hear what you are saying. I do it slightly differently. In the author resource box, there are generally the opportunity to leave 2 links.

Usually, I link back to my moneysite, and then I also link back to a web2.0 site that's linked back to my moneysite.

Starting with a brand new marketing campaign, I have noticed that the web2.0 site will rank better faster than my new, unestablied niche blog. So while thatis slowly rising in the search engines, the web2.0 site is up ahead of it, bringing in traffic to the new blog.

          Much Success,

    Ursa,

That's a pretty impressive link wheel.

    Just two questions:

    1. how long did it take you to create?
    2. how much traffic is your main site getting?

And thanks so much for taking the time to submit the image. I love visuals. Much easier to grasp the concepts.

      Kate!

I would say it takes about a month on average to create such a linkwheel.

Traffic comes from the articles (10 -13 articles) that are put on ten Web 2.0 websites, video sharing websites and organic searches.

How much traffic there is, depends on a niche, but once such a linkwheel has been created and all the properties start to rank higher and higher, it can go through the roof.

The articles are submitted both to Web 2.0 properties and article directories. I then make small linkwheels to these articles for them to rank high in the SERPS too. Usually there is a linkwheel created separately for the Web 2.0 properties and a linkwheel for the articles that are submitted to article directories.

Don't forget to submit articles to Scribd, it can rank high in Google fast these days.

Do you spin your articles? If so how many would you make per article?

Do you revisit the web 2.0 properites to add more contnet?

Which file format is best for Scribd?

Also thanks for contributing to this thread, you've definately helped me.

          Mark!

I haven't spinned any articles yet, I use unique articles (10-13), but if I needed more content, I would definitely spin these articles and make even more Web 2.0 properties. You can definitely spin a few articles and use them, instead of totally unique ones.

I convert an article to pdf and upload it to Scribd.

I don't add new content to Web 2.0 properties, I just make a few backlinks from time to time too boost their rankings even more.

I use such a linkwheel for my main keyword. When targeting other keywords, I make smaller linkwheels.

Let's say I have a blog with 10 articles - I just make smaller linkwheels for these articles (usually it even doesn't have to be for all the articles, they are already ranking high on their own).

        Ursa,

Love your concept, but from the illustration I have a hard time understanding which parts of your linkwheel are static and which are dynamic.

The 13 articles never change? Including the Goarticle?

What, if anything, changes in the linkwheel network when you put something new on your website?

    Anoter question Ursa,

I noticed that beside the web2.0 properties, you have noted "article 1", "article 2", etc.

Are these articles on the web2.0 property, or articles submitted to article directories in order to promote the web2.0 property?

sure John, this is a part of article marketing too. The point is, you try to dominate the first pages of Google with all these Web 2.0 properties, articles that you submit to article directories, videos, etc. If you think one article can give you hundreds of backlinks, imagine how many you would get this way. You can easily dominate the niche.

Oh, there's plenty of article marketing is this strategy. I have submitted 19 articles to EZA for my new blog over the past two weeks.

Creating a link wheel allows you not only to help your blig/site in the SERPS, but also your articles published in the article directories (by linking to them from the "wheel").

And it's my estimation that done properly, I'd be able to write and submit fewer articles to directories, but have them be MUCH more effective.

I'm testing this theory out myself, of course.

      Much Success,

It's just a linking strategy, and when you are adding unique, valuable and relevant information about a niche, why in the world would anyone ban you?

Well, yes, you could do that. That should really help an individual article rise in the search engines, and thus get more page views.

I was simply referring to linking to select articles from the different web2.0 sites.

Great information as this will help a bunch of people out on this forum.

I was just wondering if all your properties are dofollow or not. See I am more interest in the backlink juice instead of trying to rank my web 2.0 sites. Just trying to get my focus hub in the top 3 positions.

These are dofollow Web 2.0 websites (your link after the article is dofollow).

There are lots and lots of the websites you could also use. Just google Web 2.0 directory.

But I did not understand your first paragraph about linking after the article. Are you saying not to link from within the article but instead link from like a bio box or sentence after the article?

    Ursa,

What criteria do you use to determine which web2.0 sites to use?

And just one more question (I promise). Of the ten web2.0 sites that you use, which are the best 6 of them?

    KateD

P.S. I really do appreciate the knowledge you are sharing.

    Hi,

I have a question about do-follow and no-follow. Are we suppose to be concern about the fact that there is no link juice being pass around using no-follow web 2.0 properties?

Or does it still rank if we interlink our web 2.0 properties together?

The reason I ask is, I had tried building linkwheel and sometimes squidoo rank (an inbound link from hub which is a no-follow web 2.0) sometimes not. These linkwheel I make is of the same niche but different keywords.

So what do you guys think of it?

    Thank in advance.

    Hi Ursa,

Can you please explain the lower right hand of the diagram? What do you mean by social bookmarking block, social bookmark sites (200-300) linking to yoru site?
And what about profiles on PR sites in Google? Sites where you can create profiles, and just place links to your main site in the profile created for each?

    Thanks for the info!

    UPDATE:

So the other night and went ahead and stayed up until about 4:30am creating my first link wheel to promote a new niche blog I started.

    Here are the specifics:

    1. I used seven web2.0 sites for my link wheel. They are:

    - Squidoo
    - Hubpages
    - Blogger
    - Weebly
    - Blogsome
    - Tumblr
    - Vox

Now, I really didn't want to use Squidoo, but a few of the possible web2.0 sites I was going to use seemed overcomplicated to set up, so I stuck with mostly websites that I'm familiar with.

    2. I used 7 original articles. Now, I know that a lot of people would have used just one original article and spun the remaining six from it.

And although I really wanted to do that (to save a TON of time), I didn't because of this thought. If I'm linking these spun articles to each other, wouldn't it be held against me (in terms of SEO), to have them so similar to one another?

So I toughed it out and wrote 7 original articles. But, I wrote these articles around the same keyword phrase.

    3. I linked the 7 web2.0 sites in a big circle. Some people don't close the loop. so to speak, but I did.

    4. On each web2.0 property, I linked back to my blog homepage, and then to an individual post inside of my blog. I did both these types of links as anchor text links within my articles. Very nice job of it if I do say so myself.

    5. Another thing that I did was add three links on each web2.0 property back to 3 articles that I have on Ezinearticles.com. My thinking was that I was trying to give them additional backlinks using the link wheel (and therefore - hopefully - having them rise in the SERPS).

    6. To keep things simple, I started a new email address of this link wheel. The next link wheel I created, I will use a new email again, even when promoting this same niche blog.

    7. I also took the 7 web2.0 links and pinged them with pingler.com and pingomatic.com. i tried doing the same for the RSS feeds, but I was way too tired to find the RSS feeds for all 7 web2.0 sites.

Now, it's only been a few days since I completed the link wheel and have seen no effects from it. I also have done nothing to promote it...yet.

My goal is to submit articles to promote each property in the link wheel at least once.

So what do you guys think of my my first link wheel? Good or no?

What should I do to improve it?

I'd love to hear your opinions!

      Hi Kate!

Sorry that I haven't been active in this thread. I'm on vacation and the internet here can be a bit slow.

I don't see anything wrong with your linkwheel, but I have never used this kind of structure before, so maybe someone else can tell you more.

You don't say exactly how you use your anchor texts (just that you focus on one keyword), but what I always do is I never use the same anchor text for the web properties - my main keyword goes to the main site, other keywords I want to target, go to the next web property. That way, I target and try to rank for more keywords at the same time.

Just promote the properties with articles, like you said. If you haven't yet, submit RSS feeds to RSS directories. If you subscribe to any of the backlinking wsos, use those too.

Now you can focus on other keywords too.

Thanks for your sharing. To build a link wheel is really a difficult task for me. Until now, I have just used Weebly, Blogsome and other article directory sites to promote my sites and products.

In my eyes, in order to build a link wheel, we must have enough time to do this work. Could you show me more detailed tips here? For example, how to manage your time and work regularly?

      Thanks!

        Hi...

I really don't see building linkwheels any more difficult than article marketing. Sure, there are a few more steps (choosing templates, adding imagies, etc), but you also have a lot more freedom.

If you can do article marketing, then you can definitely create effective linkwheels.

Guys, the only difference between a normal mini-farm linking strategy and linkwheels seems to be the fact that they link to each other. If you did not bother linking them in a "wheel" would it have any less effect? Just curios if anyone has seen anything results wise or if this is bascially a concept people are assuming must speed things up?

wow Ursa I like your link wheel strategy, very detailed thanks for sharing it. I guess using it as template is one thing but I dont like to replicate the model over & over as Google can simply modify the algorithm and if it effects one then it effects all.

Yes, it really is just a model. I use completely different "link wheels" for every client I work with.

I vary the Web 2.0 websites, social bookmarking websites, RSS directories and high pr websites are always different too. I like to submit articles to more then one article directory and link to those articles from completely different high pr websites every time.

I have redesigned one of my websites and I now target completely different keywords. So far I have only made the left side of the total serp domination example and my website is already ranking on page 2. I know this is temporary but when the complete "link wheel" (I don't like to call it a link wheel, becasue it isn't) will be done, I will again have no trouble ranking on the first page for my chosen keywords. It's a powerful strategy and I had no trouble ranking high so far (for my or my clients websites).

Wow, I was feeling good about myself and the 9 wheels I've set up until I read this thread. Now I can see at least one major mistake i've made.

First of, my contribution. I make wheels that consist of six spokes/sites. Those sites are
    livejournal
    easyjournal
    blogger
    blogsome
    squidoo
    vox

When the wheel has been completed and tested, I use pingomatic.

I've been using one article 6 times in each wheel which is (from reading this thread) a mistake.

Have to work on refining my system.

    Silly question but one I just want to be absolutely clear on;

You link all your articles and properties to the next by not using the same keywords

    However...

With all the sites you use to link to your main/money site do you point everything to your homepage or do you point any of these web 2.0 properties and articles to any other pages on your main site depending on what keywords your targeting?

There's not set rules for any of this. What I generally do is point a keyword-focused web2.0 property to both the homepage and the post/page on my blog/site that targets the same keyword.

      Does that make sense?

        Yes thank you.

So with the links in your web 2.0 properties do you add say 3 links and point 2 to the home page and one to the article page.

I've also noticed that you can link some of the web 2.0 properties to each other via adding RSS feed widgets (e.g Blogger).

Ursa, your pic is awesome! I'm going to try something similar to that. Had a question though. The high PR sites pointing to goarticles... what are those? And are the 100 authority high PR sites kind of like Angela's backlinks?

I think that you just have to be creative about it now. Don't "close the wheel" so to speak. Change up the types of links. Change up the keyword phrases. Make them unique. There's definitely a way to minimize the"footprint".

    - It is much more beneficial to use Article Submissions and Blog Posts as well as Web 2.0 sites.

      David,

In your system, is a 'blog post' something from a Web 2.0 free blog like Blogger or Wordpress.com? Or is it a blog post on your own website?

The gaps - denoted by the (x) in the silver wheel are (IMO) vital.
They obfuscate the fact that it is a link wheel in terms of what the search engines see. They have one gap - I have two. No matter where you go on my link wheel you can only get to half the entities.

They all get bookmarked and pinged, so it's no big deal that the SE's don't see them as a wheel.

In fact far better NOT to be seen as a wheel.

Imagine a bicycle rim without a rim (or with gaps in the rim).

These web2.0 entities (and I include the top article sites like Zine and Go in that) are the first tier after your own web properties. You then want another tier of cheap and cheerful links (low PR - 2 max, 0 or 1 mostly would be fine) pointing to your WEB2.0.

        Preferably THOUSANDS of them

Then bookmark, RSS, ping the lot.

My main point? (sorry I'm wandering)

Don't let your link wheel be recognisable as a link wheel by the SE's

If you can write 25 small articles in a day, and make 4 or 6 good pages to link them to, then the basics of a very effective site and supporting wheel can be up in 24 hours.

Then spend the rest of the week making vids/PDF's/.exe.s (all for submission here and there) and promoting the backside off the lot using rapid linking services and whatever mean and wicked ways you can.

I'm switching to a product by one of our own warriors for this last part (no names no pack drill)

Do you mind sharing a little more about your "linkwheel" experience?

      - How many web2.0 properties did it consist of?
      - Did you use unique and original articles?
      - How did you stucture the inter-linking?
      - Did you use anchor text links with the keyword phrase you were targeting? Did you target a specific keyword phrase?
      - Did you ping all of the web2.0 properties that you could?
      - Did you social bookmark all of the web2.0 properties?
      - Did you submit all available web2.0 RSS feeds to a RSS distribution site (like feedage.com)?
      - Did you build any backlinks to any of the web2.0 properties?

The reason I ask so many questions is because to have a successful linkwheel, there are many more steps then people think.

I mean, if you did everything above and still didn't see some positive effect, then I would be very surprised.

Like any marketing strategy that gets popular, to maintain it's effectiveness, you need to do two things:

      1. Think outside of the box
      2. Work extra hard

Number 1 is more glamorous, but nothing pays more consistently than good old hard work.

      Much Success,

I'm still pretty new to all this though and have a question--Do you create a blog/account/whatever on each of those sites and set the links up with them that way, or do you utilise comment fields in others' blogs/sites on there, or both?

      Hi...

I use blogs for link wheels and blog commenting to create backlinks.

One thing I do is to create a new gmail email account with each linkwheel. Makes things easier to manage when you have multiple linkwheels.

This is an excellent thread that I have come across. I have been using link wheel from few months but have got very little success with it. I used to create a wheel with 6 spokes or web 2.0 properties and after creating a wheel I always used to ping and social bookmark it but I have seen approx zero result of it.
    * I tried with both open as well as closed wheel

      Hi...

Can I ask you a question? Did you target the linkwheel toward a specific keyword phrase, or just the niche you are in in general?

I deal with Warriors choosing the correct keyword on a daily basis. And I have found that if someone who is putting in the required actions and still is not seeing results with their marketing efforts, it's usually because they are targeting the wrong keyword phrase ( or none at all).

So let's say that you have a blog on acne. I wouldn't recommend creating a linkwheel focused around the "acne" keyword. Instead, after doing proper keyword research, I would choose a niche related keyword phrase that gets plenty of searches and has lower amounts of competition (athough now it's mandatory for me to check on the first page competition of EVERY keyword phrase).

I find the most success with linkwheels when I target certain keyword phrases. And when I say "target", I mean creating the content, titles, links, etc, all using the specific keyword phrase.

      Does that make sense?

I always used to target low competition keywords. I work with mini sites actually which have low competition and can be easily ranked on no. 1 page of google. I had a quick research with one of my mini site. I just created 2 link wheels for it using 6 web 2.0 properties and left it as it is for 2-3 weeks. There were no improvement at all. At the same time I did some social bookmarking and blog commenting for my another site with same competition as site no. 1 (for which I created link wheel) and banggg.. site was on # 2 of search term.

That what i concluded that social bookmarking + blog commenting did much better than link wheel.. (at least for me)

But may be it work well for others as they are saying. I really appreciate your and other peoples explanation about this method. You all rock here..

        Cheers guys..

I just see linkwheels as a good way to build backlinks and get your money site some love, and it naturally makes sense to me.

I would think what you do on the backend to those web 2.0 sites is what determines the success of the linkwheel i.e linking to it, social bookmarking and pinging them.

That said, had anybody worked with any good software that can help build linkwheels? The only I found so far is Daniel Tan's Web Link Robot

@Ursa - Your link wheel seems to be quite confusing for me. I can understand the left spokes but unable to understand the concept of those high PR sites. Could you please explain what are these sites actually??

Senuke is effective at speeding up the process.

It allows you to post your articles (can also spin articles) to different web 2.0 sites automatically, then randomly link them together.

There seems to be a great deal of confusion about link wheels so I have created some key points:

        1. No reciprocal links. I.E. If your squidoo links to your blogger, then don't link your blogger to your squidoo.

        2. The web 2.0 sites should all link back to your "money site" all targeting the same keyword but vary the anchor text. I.E. if the keyword you want your "money site" to rank for is "dog training advice" then the anchor text could be "dog training advice", " best dog training advice", "online dog training advice" "dog training advice and tips". Having the same anchor text from hundreds of different links screams spam.

        3. Never do the same link wheel twice. Google isn't dumb

        4. When adding content to your web 2 sites, use different articles and target each web 2 to a new keyword. This way your web 2.0 sites can rank in the SERPS for different terms and funnel traffic back to your money pages.

        5. Bookmark and add links to your web 2.0 sites

        6. Make sure your money pages are all linked to from relevant web 2.0's. I.E. don;t use the same web 2.0's for your guitar and make money niches.

        7. Make sure that you vary up your links to your money pages. I.E. build links from web 2.0, social bookmarks, forum posting, articles, pad submitts and more

        I hope this helps

          Christian,

Great tips there! To get the most out link wheel now, you have to do additional backlinking, pinging, rss feed distribution, etc.

Sure, it takes more work now to see results. However, most people aren't taking those extra steps to really make their link wheels effective.

Thank all of you for a very informative thread. Main point of confusion for me, is what happens when you have more than one article/post etc on the web 2.0 site. Say you are going for the keyword "big dogs barking" and on another wheel maybe the keyword "Nebraska island cruises." Now because you like squidoo or hubpages or whatever, and use them for both wheels (I know you should vary the sites, but there will be some crossovers). Now there will be internal links to your profiles, if nothing else, if you rate high enough on Hubpages or Squidoo to get the do follow breaks these sites give if you are doing well. Now my question is, does that end up causing a link between the two wheels that leaks your link juice into Nebraska? Or another obvious example, your website will be linked to several wheels, and it would seem that would tend to close the loop on all those wheels, with your website being the tying link. Same with both wheels being bookmarked to your profile on Mixx or some other book marking site.. seems like the link closes all over the net...
