Changing permalink structure in old site - worth the risk ?

Hello,
I have pretty busy site with almost 8 years old, but my actual permalink structure is something like:
site.com/blog/year/mouth/day/name-of-the-post/ (too long)
Years ago my rankings were high, the structure didn't seem to affect anything. I can't say the same today.
My biggest fear is changing the permalink structure, even with 301 redirects, and lose a lot of traffic forever....
Do you guys think that worth the risk changing this structure to:
site.com/name-of-the-post/ ?
From I all read, this seems to be the best choice, but it would be good to read some PERSONAL experience in this matter.
