Market Samurai is my favorite keyword research tool. It effectively takes your keywords, suggests hundreds more and then upon selection, will begin measuring the ranking difficulty for each.

You get to see the websites ranking highest for a specific keyword and then all of the reasons why, including all of their page backlinks, domain backlinks, authority backlinks (.edu, .gov, etc.), page rank, # of pages on their site...and the list goes on.

This tool lets you know if it's worth pursuing a keyword based on the difficulty they present to you and allows you to also target your competitors' backlinks to see if you can also get links on the same sites.
