Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have two sites that target the exact same long tail keyword phrase.

1) Site #1 is ranked on the first page of Google.

The average position is #1.2.

69 clicks compared to 133 impressions during the last month.

About 50% CTR. Not bad.

2) Site #2 is ranked on the first page of Google as well. The average position is #7.6. So, I would expect lower number of clicks, right?

No.

I have received 72 clicks. Which is more than the site ranked at the top. That's fine, maybe the META description is better or whatever.

But what gets me is: it has 451 impressions?!!!!

How is the site that is ranked towards the bottom of the page getting 3 times as many impressions that the site ranked at the top for the exact same long tail keyword phrase?

Theoretically, they should have the same number of impressions since they are both on the first page.

Any ideas why the site at the top of the rankings is getting less impressions for the exact same long tail keyword phrase?

Most likely the second site is ranked higher on certain longtails and you just can't see the keywords because they show up as not provided.

With traffic levels that low most of the longtails are not going to show up in a tool like SEMRush.

What exactly do yo mean by SEO matrix to be clear here? Like your SEO is in the matrix?

      Thanks for your reply.

The stats I have included in this post are just from one specific long tail keyword phrase.

      ie., "word word word"

Agreed with this reply for sure. May be you are getting impressions for the keywords you haven't supposed to target or you don't know either they are ranking as well. Since Google is providing best result as per content and search query so may be some of your page is generating such impressions.

And yes SEO and Matrix lol.

is it possible that the description for the second site is better suited and more relevant to the visitor

Google is making a best fit to where you rank but the person looking for what your providing may find the second site better suited to what they are looking for

happens all the time for me

      Thanks for the reply.

The description could explain the number of clicks.

But it doesn't explain why the site ranked lower is getting 3 times the impressions for the exact long tail keyword phrase.

Yeah, if you go to Webmaster tool and look under search analytics for your site, Webmaster Tools also shows how many impressions your site gets for a keyword or keyword phrase. In other words, it shows how many times your site shows up when someone searches using a particular keyword phrase.

Change the Google Webmaster Tools search data filter (desktop, mobile, image) & see If one delivers more traffic. Example, the #7 ranked desktop page might be ranked #1 on Mobile search.

Thanks for the idea and suggestion.

I don't see a difference in rankings when I compare this but thanks for the tip as I can use this to further analyze my data.
