I've never ran any test on this, but it's not that uncommon for the homepage to have two URLs. It's not optimal, but probably not the most important thing to take care of. I'm pretty sure that Google knows that this happens.

If you can't remove the page/URL/link, can you point the canonical to the root? That way you'd instruct Google that it's the same exact page, and they don't need to index the copy.

You need to resolve the 301 error or canonical issue to your two distinct website into a single website as you want.

I'm wondering that you created another home page in which is duplicate and redundant because example(dot)com is already your home page. I think you are the one creating the errors in the website try to consult a well experienced SEO.

or you can use canonical tag for home page.

Search engines would consider them as two separate and distinct pages (and since you mentioned that they are both essentially the home page, search engines would see this as duplicate pages) which is kinda bad while also confusing your visitors.
