Will a single page website have a harer chance of ranking then a full website with 5 or more pages?

Google is in fact a "Page Ranker" at it's core. Not a website ranker. With that being said If I wanted to build a single page website would I have a 'harder' time ranking this single page for a specific keyword(s) in the eyes of Google?

This single page would have both great on-site and off-site SEO. Just as any other full site. The only difference is that it is a single page. The only con I can think of is that there is no internal linking between pages.

Also it is important to note this is not squeeze page or anything like that. The page would be full of helpful content that would truly be better than the pages of websites currently being ranked for that keyword in the SERPs.

Any advice would be helpful thanks.

For example: I have a website. It is a single page site. That website is http://www.kellygaskins.com/ (this site is a site for a missing friend.) Technically I am the authoritative website on this 'topic' I rank in the top 1 - 3 spots of Google for keywords such as:

ginni wood

irvin williams missing

jenna and kelly missing from north carolina

kelly gaskins

kelly gaskins genny

kelly gaskins mexico missing

kelly gray gaskins found

missing irving and kelly mexico

missing person Kelly Gaskins



This page is a single page website. BUT it has a navigation menu to certain key parts of the page. Does this matter?

    You can if it's some stupidly low competition, zero search volume keyword.

    If you could do it for any type of search volume keywords, could you imagine the amount of single page domains / landing pages that would be polluting the SERPs?

    In your case, there's only 5 other results for the keyword "irvin williams missing".

    You're the only result for "kelly gray gaskins found".

    Focus on user experience rather than figuring out which way of creating a website would rank higher.

    I can think of quite a few cons of having a single page, and interlinking is the least of your worries I'd think. The crucial one for me is that you would have to focus on one topic only which would have limited your online exposure to one page and if you stuffed that one page with any other (quality) content it would become irrelevant to a degree, which would have confused an end user and therefore ranked worse as its too broad.

    More pages = better chance of ranking at least one of them high imo, so the answer is no.

      Yeah I see your point and am working with the same main con. A single obviously for SEO purposes means only one real topic. I'll try it on something harder than what I already have. Maybe do a small case study on it.. Thanks for your reply.

    anyways it just depends on how good the off page seo is. For instance some authority sites like wiki pedia or similar do not have to do any off page seo. They just throw up a page and its basically guaranteed to be on google page one. One of the reasons for this is because they have SO many pages of content that google knows they are a huge authority. So in theory you can say the more pages you have the better chance you have at getting high rankings. So less pages would make it harder to achieve the same results.

    Not a good idea, and chance of ranking higher is not possible with high competition keyword. Try to create users beneficial contents in your website and you'll get high ranking naturally.
