The three similar sites but different geo targeting. Is it works?

We started our Russian mathematical site about 3 years ago. Now we reached 25 000 hosts and received about 2 000 thanksgiving messages from teachers and parents. Pupils are leaving many comments. So we make sure that our math worksheets, activities and tests are useful (because the are all unique and free). We decided to translate many of these worksheets and tests into English as the math studying content almost the same as for USA, Russia, UK, Canada or Australia (to tell the truth there are very little difference).
So questions for SEO experts:
1. We decided to create three domains, sites (one for the USA and Canada, another for UK and Europe and the last one for Australia, New Zealand and other Asia countries). Every site will have almost the same content,
but have geo targeting to appropriate countries by Google Web Master. Will the sites competition with each other? Because there are no geo targeting words in keywords and description tags?
2. We have about 1000 articles (2 to 15 Kilobyte each). We are planning to place about 50 articles and after that begin to promotion in social networks. Is it good strategy?
3. Is it worth to register in the directories or it is the lost time?
