Aged Domains and SEO Advantages

Are there still any advantages to using aged domains? I am entering a niche in which most of the sites that appear on page 1 of Google have an average domain age of 14 years. My domain is 14 years old but currently has no content on it and archive.org shows past history of it redirecting to a site in the same niche.

I am wondering should I build a brand behind this domain in hopes that in future years I may gain some SEO advantage and compete with those that are on page 1 or start new. I realize to begin making money I will do best in using PPC and do SEO slowly and safely.

    Id say it's likely that an aged domain that is clean of any issues would have a slight advantage over a new domain. Either way it likely not to hurt, and only help, assuming the aged domain is trustworthy with no black hat.
  • Yes in SEO domain age matter a lot in the ranking of your website.
  • Domain age is a minor, minor ranking factor at best.

    What likely has a much bigger impact is link age.

  • Thanks Mike your comment about link age makes sense. I guess I will go ahead and use the domain. Every little bit helps when going against established competition.

    There has never been an advantage with old domains. The advantage is established backlink profiles.

    The proof is look at old domains with no backlinks, they're useless for SEO.

      Note: Because things are different for different regions (apparently), I broke this post up into two separate sections.

      To India:
      BS, I just launched a site yesterday with an aged domain. It's for my new book coming out soon. It's about how rank sites by losing weight. I'm completely dominating the SERPs right now with my aged domain. Completely crushing Alexa as well. All I did was spin a bunch of PLR content, shared the content on a bunch of social sharing sites, then built a bunch of nofollow links into the social shares with fiverr gigs.

      Not India:
      I have been buying domains for a long time, some I've owned since 2000, and I can confirm what Mike/Yukon said. It doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference, new domain vs old domain. With some of the backlinks tools the older domains have a bunch more (worthless) links from the domain/website tool sites. I'm sure that all that matters is the quality links, since I'm sure Google knows some people rent domains. It would just be too easy to manipulate Google with domain age. This is another one of these things where you need to ask yourself: "How stupid do you think a company worth half a trillion dollars is?"

      Back to India:
      Unless you use that secret ninja method I mentioned. I know it works because that's what you guys all do. It seems to me like you all took the same course, which was translated from some SEO guide originally written in English in 2002. Pretty sure Brad Callen wrote it, yeah, pretty sure about that. I still have a copy somewhere.
  • Sounds to me that I would be better suited to build a brand that's easy to remember and get a domain to reflect that brand. Thanks for the education.
