I have read that they are not necessary anymore.

I am asking because the one I wanted was taking in the .com.

Wondering if I should try to name after the city for lead gen or just name the site and buy the domain of the name?

What are your thoughts?

    If it is a local business, name after the city.
    Otherwise, .com is no longer necessary, but if someone has your .com damin, well, it at least leaves a bitter taste when the business takes off. But this is something subjective then
