Delete old links on google or?

Hi there,

I have a wordpress website with about 230 pages. I've submitted it to Google and had about 100 pages indexed.

Later I've restructured the website, changed url structure "site/location/service/etc."

My question is what do I do with the old pages that have already been indexed? If say one page already ranked week for a specific keyword, will the new link replace it or do I have to somehow redirect it?

How do people usually go about in this situation?

  • first, deindexed all the link you have
    second, restructure your site

    • You will need to re-submit your site map to Web Master Tools and redirect pages that do not exist anymore to pages that do.
      If you are using WordPress and don't really care were the pages are redirected then you can use the plugin 404 Redirection by flippingwp to redirect all links back to your homepage.

    If you don't have any backlinks or rank for any keywords then there's nothing more to do with the old URLs. No redirects needed.

    If you have decent backlinks and/or rank for keywords then you need to redirect the old URL to the exact replacement page URL.

    Just know a redirect doesn't guarantee Google will still rank a new page in an old page/URL SERP position, especially If the on-page text changes drastically on the new page.
