White Hat and Black Hat SEO?

Last week, someone asked me if I am familiar with black, white and grey hat SEO.
My response was, I only know black and white, other than that I don't consider as an SEO technique.

Is it just me? Because in my opinion, there is really just black and white technique.
Is grey hat really an SEO technique that I should consider?

At the risk if pissing people off again, there is no such thing as "whitehat".

You're either optimizing your sites, and breaking the rules, or you aren't.

If you're already building links to your sites in an effort to rank higher, they're "greyhat".

As for what that person may have been talking about, there's 3 levels of SEO that's spouted off these days.

Whitehat -- also known as content marketing.

Greyhat -- manipulating your whitehat content to rank higher using strategies that may, or may not get picked off.

Blackhat -- manipulating content to rank highly using short term (possibly long term) strategies. Some blackhat stuff is downright illegal, other stuff is just looked down upon.

    In my opinion:
Grey hat: As technical combination "black hat" and "white hat" in order to achieve better results than "white hat". Difficult to distinguish between movements of the SEO website. Better technical results "white hat". Risk of being "banned" low, but also one of cases unsafe when applying this technique.
Most of the SEO service company or individual to do SEO for website SEOers commonly applied techniques "gray hat" more, because if applicable technical "white hat", will have a longer time, that expenditure fees are not allowed.

If applicable technical "gray hat" improper, the website can be listed in the following cases:
    + Fall in Sandbox
+ Tag your website does not appear in the search results in one long
+ Home not indexed in search results
    + Tag quickly relegated
The most effective way to promote your site on search engine is to analyze the strategy and direction for the website based on the keywords to SEO.

If you break the rules Google will catch up with you sooner or later so in my opinion it's not worth it.
Google is not dumb and the search engine is only going to get smarter over time.

I understand your perspective on this one, however if we define whitehat SEO
as on-page building, focusing on structure and content along the lines of google suggestions, then there is no rule breaking.

Greyhat for most people, usually consists of building backlinks for your website.

Blackhat is associated with exploiting the google ranking algorithm, and taking advantage of it. That's the reason it is considered short-lived most times.
Because google keeps detecting blackhat tactics, thus improving their algorithm.

        Cheers.

They're not techniques. Just metaphors for some very broad classes of SEO stuff.

There's a lot of stuff that's on a the gray area. Might be even most of SEO.

In my opinion, Grey hat SEO is a technique that lies between white hat and black hat SEO. As I recently have read, grey hat SEO is a practise of using technically legal methods to improve a website rankings, but which are ethically dubious, and could one day become black hat.

I totally agree with you TOM WEST. White hat is natural way of building links and black hat is negative way of building links according to Google Algorithms. Recently grey hat SEO is mostly used to rank website in SERP. And soon grey hat SEO gonna banned in google algorithms.

As a digital marketing expert I didn't hear about the Purple Hat SEO, In my knowledge there are three types of SEO is present they are:
    1. White hat
    2. Black hat
    3. Grey hat
All digital marketing and SEO experts do their work by using these three techniques as a base.

    Let me loosely help

White Hat: Playing around with your title and meta tags but not spamming
Grey Hat: As above but link building from "relevant website", buying links
Black Hat: Keyword stuffing, SEO Nuke, White text on white background
Illegal Hat: Hacking website sql injections, mass html uploads (Some twat did that to me)

Stop wearing hats and build a sustainable business and mix it all up.

Don't obsess over meaning, do what you feel you know better. Some people are naturally born writers and churn out great content, and love networking and being social, so they become white hatters.

Other people are not fulfilled by writing, so they use blackhat methods.

I think ot will be interesting for you to read this quote:
In the words of SEO Consultant, John Andrews, Gray Hat SEO is not something between Black Hat and White Hat, but rather "the practice of tactics/techniques which remain ill-defined by published material coming out of Google, and for which reasonable people could disagree on how the tactics support or contrast with the spirit of Google’s published guidelines."
    .
I fully agree with this point of view and i wish you to know that it can be really beneficial for you as it is simply reward in exchange for risk!

Following webmaster tool is guides and doing a seo, that mean don't violate the Google webmaster guidelines. That is White hat method.

Black hat is direct opposite for white hat method, cheating Google and generating back links in a opposite way, that is called Black hat method.
