301 redirect advice needed

Hello all,

Been a while since ive posted here.

I have a website i currently rank 1st on Google for (for a specific search term) which happens to be the URL itself (pretty much)

The website in question has been re-designed (with mostly) the same content on a different domain, the idea was to get the new site up which it now is, then re-direct the old site to the new one. My question is the best way to go about this as to not lose any rankings/link juice in the process. If i do the 301 will the old domain drop its rankings or will the old domains ranking spot be replaced with the new domain?

The new domain is currently not found on Google because i believe Google detects its too similar and goes for the older original site and does not show the new one. (the new domain is still viewable if i google the URL so not black listed)

I have not performed a 301 before so its new territory for me.

Any advice or help on how to tackle this would be great!

When you have all your 301's in place and you're ready to go...

Google Webmaster Tools - Search Console

click on cog wheel - top right
    Select 'Change of Address'
    Fill in your details.
    pray.

    Hi Tim3,

Thanks for taking the time to post this its pretty much what i was looking for, stumbled upon some of it before you posted. however what happens to the old domain i think it ranks well because of its URL does the URL still stay where it is and will rank for it name and just constantly re-directs to the new site?

Or does the old URL get replaced by the new one therefore a possible drop in rank as far as URL matching search phrases?

301 redirection definitely give the all the link juice to the new domain, then whatever the keyword rank to old domain slowly transfer to the new domain.

301 does pass the link juice. However it also passes anchor text distribution ( if sites are in the same topic) and penalty if any
