Such a thing as an "aged" Google My Business listing?

I was speaking with another SEO who said he's been employing a trick that makes his Google Business listings appear older to Google. The theory is that Google prefers the older listing over a brand new one much like it treats an aged domain in its SERP.
He showed me evidence of it - a snack pack where the top listing had 0 reviews and minimal website trust, but outranking others that had 15+ reviews. When I asked "how?", he didn't want to give up the goods.
Is there any validity to his claim? Any theories on how this would be done?
