I have a brand new blog on my own server
and my main monetization is from AdSense ads.

However the CTR is quite low, so I ask tips from you
how to increase that.

The site is here:
Reverse Mortgage Earnings Blog

Should I change locations, AdSense ads or
template?

All tips are wellcome,

Thanks,
Juhani

    Short Answer: Increase traffic
Long Answer: Participate in your site niche related forums, get backlinks from blogs, apply social bookmarks, get Angla/paul's pacakge - All these will lead you to get more traffic from search engines. However, apart from this, you can get more traffic via Twitter as well as via facebook too

Experiment with location and formats including colour variations. Analyse your quality of traffic and improve it is possible. Then determine whether the ads displayed are actually relevant to what your traffic is interested in. Try filtering out some of the advertisers. Good luck!

      Mixed fonts.

Your ads are in one font and your content's in another. I personally prefer non-footed fonts, but some folks think that looks too mechanical.

I would also suggest changing your blogs hyperlinks to match the google link color or vice versa. I would prefer vice versa as that royal blue default link color is easily identified by most users. Another option is black ad hyperlinks to fully blend the ads into the page.

Finally, can you wrap your first paragraph around that top left ad block? There may or may not be room using that size ad block.

You've got the blocks in right spots, but they need to be incorporated just a little more to blend in.

There are templates that allow you to put your AdSense at the bottom of the post, right before the comments section. This is ideal because if they've read all the way through your article, they're primed and obviously interested in the content and more likely to click for more information.

It's true what others said about the colors of the font in the AdSense ad matching the color of the link in your text. They should be the same so people don't see them as "different" from your regular posts. It should all look the same.

How much traffic are you getting to the site? To increase traffic you should encourage people to leave comments and then have the plug in that allows people to follow the comments. That way they keep coming back to the site over and over to stay in touch. Build more community and people will stick around on your page more and be more likely to click relevant ads.

ı saw only one adsense link unit on your blog... Make a adsense block on Top of articles and one in the end. this may help you a little .

Actually I had 336 x 280 just under the title
      but with bad results.

I think there is something wrong with the template
      or the psychological things.
The AdSense should be somehow in the centre of
what people see and are interested about.

You Adsense ads need to be inthe center of your blog and one adsense column is not good enough.

What You can do is place your adsense ads above your content and have only adsense links leaving your website. The read more is taking your readers away from having to click on your adsense ads.

Provide all the content without them having to click to else where to get the other information.

When you post, only allow one post to display for each topic that you do. This will help to increase you click through.

      Hi Juhani,

Having taken a look at your blog, I can see several issues which are no doubt costing you adsense clicks (and earnings).

      1) The template you are using is not ideal for adsense, even though I know Dosh Dosh made it for such. In my experience, the ideal template is totally white background (both the body where the text is and outside the boundary of the blog).

I have personally had success optimising 2 of my client's websites for adsense, such that they have both earned over US$20,000 each in the last few years. Yes, there are MUCH bigger success stories out there, but $40K aint too shabby IMHO :-)

I prefer a wider site (upto 960px) so it is stretched out a bit. Yours looks extremely crowded and I think that might be working against you. The ad blocks look less "artificial" if the article post is quite a bit wider than the adblock itself.

One of the big keys is to ensure your blog's font is EXACTLY the same as your adsense ads. From memory, Arial is a good choice.

Next, the blog BODY text should be plain black with hyperlinks all formatted as "normal" blue underlined. (go look at a google search page result - black text, blue underlined hyperlinks)

Your ads should also have black body and ONLY the the first/top line should be "normal" blue with underline. The URL at the bottom of each ad should also be black - the same as the body.

No background colour or border showing on the ads, or they will NOT blend into the site. You currently are not hitting with mark with both of these issues, hence people recognise them as ads instantly.

When using a wordpress blog, the normal front page is a list of articles running in descending date order down the page (usually 10 posts). From memory, google will only allow you to have 3-4 ads showing on any one page, so there is no way you can blend an ad into each post unless you drop the number of posts on the home page.

The way around this is to use the MORE... link (the read the rest of this entry link) to break up each post into 1 paragraph of keyword relevent text and then insert the MORE tag.

Once they click the link, it will take them to a page with the full article, and you can insert an ad after the more link. For an example of this technique, check out one of my test sites here: Magic Tricks TV Note, I do not have the ads at the top of the article. Trial both ways and see which works best. This was a special case due to the video on each post.

IDEALLY, I prefer the ad to be blended with the post by either being at the top of the article, UNDER the headline, but ABOVE the first line of the article, OR, on the left with the article text wrapped around it.

You could also try just showing the article/post title by itself, with no 1st paragraph - that way, when you click thru to the post, it shows the ad above the post and under the 1st paragraph.

I generally only use 336x280 or 300x250 sized ad blocks. They seem to work best for some reason.

I also only have 1 ad per page. The more ads you have on a page, the more chance someone will click an ad NOT in the first ad block, and the money you earn will be less.

The most expensive payout comes from the first ad in the first adblock and it goes down from there. Therefore, don't saturate your site in ads or it will cost you money.

Get rid of the tower ad down the side, and the link ad at the top should be ok, although I'd test whether it costs you money or not to have it there.

No other ad blocks anywhere. Just 1 per page at the top of the page UNDER the headline.

If you want this to be a good earning site, it's worth tracking your results, because it will allow you to find unappropriate ads which show up on your site & block them from ever showing again. This is a VITAL tactic to increase ad relevence AND income on an adsense site.

I would go through my client's sites every now and then & copy the url of non-relevent advertisers and add it to my block list. Adsense isn't perfect & you want highly relevent ads to get the best results.

OK, that's enough for now! :-) Hope it works out well.

    Hi runner,

While I agree that you should experiment with various layouts I would also closely examine your traffic. I often see folks struggling with their AdSense CTR and the reason is more often then not their source of traffic.

The fact that you have traffic doesn't mean it's well targeted. Often people will try to get traffic from any source they can without considering if that traffic will be suitable for an AdSense site. The bulk of your traffic must be coming to your website with the intent of buying something your advertiser is selling, otherwise your CTR and EPC will be very low.

I think you have some good feedback above about your ad placement and template... this makes an enormous difference.

In addition, add an email subscription and give something away for free. Build a list and each time you have new content to post you can email your list... bring visitors back to your site and have another chance to get them to click your ads.
