I am trying to compete with various blogs within the geek cosmos. Screwattack,Inverse,kotaku.com, etc.. I need to answer questions my geek family are asking insteading just writing opinion pieces and things I and my team just want to write about.

What methods and various tools should I consider deploying to do such things? I currently have a subscription to market samurai and learning it. What else do you guys suggest?

Find the places where people who are interested in that subject communicate.

What are people asking on forums? The titles alone can yield great content ideas.

Where do they ask questions? Are they on Yahoo! Answers or Quora talking about their interests?

What are they asking in comments on other blogs? Are they asking follow-up questions in related YouTube comments?

This is one of those areas where tools aren't the best answer. It's better to understand who your customers are and what their problems are. Online communities are the best place to go for this.

Look through social media groups. Try to communicate as personally as you can.
Following your audience through message boards or general mass query sites such Quora is always good. But they are not enough. The way that I found very useful is by creating online surveys for my customers. By this not only it helps me to understand their problems easily but also it increases my authority.

Do you have a Fb/Tw/G+ page with some followers? Then try to create engaging posts that attract people into commenting and expressing their opinion.

Guys, I want to thank you all for responding. You guys are pointing towards polls and things of this nature. That's all good, but I've done that and people are not responding unless you are already and authority. I'ver actually put some of my polls through fb advertising and have had very little success. I have a decent size fb page, twitter following and I garner more followers through hashtagging each post.

    But...

I need to figure out what my audience is keyword phrasing period and answer questions that way. I can ask groups, forums, etc.. specific questions as if to say what are they looking for or inquriing about. But come on guys, I need to figure out what the majority of my geek brethren are asking and attack that way in addition to continually doing the aforementioned things...

I'm still having this same issue actually.

So let me slightly rephrase the question.

In any niche, if you wanted to know what your audience was searching for and wanted to write content accordingly, what is the best way to get this done?

You can use Google Trends, Qoura and Yahoo ANswers than narrow down your search to your desired categories and subcategories,
