Huge sudden ranking drop in google, how to find out why?

Until around September 2015 a year old website i made for a client was very highly ranked in google.ch (switzerland).

If you google-searched for a name of someone thats listed on the page, this page would usually turn up first, or in the top 3 results.

Suddenly google rankings dropped drastically and didnt recover since then. Most results now turn up on page 2-3, instead of result 1-3 of page one. IF they even show up, now sometimes the obituary sub-page of a person doesn't get indexed at all.

Roughly around the same time the rankings dropped, we added links for each city, instead of beeing available just through a drop down menu. But i cant say if it was caused by this, or was just coincidence. After about a month or two we reversed the changes and waited again, but it didn't change the ranking.

In february i changed the sites link-structure to make it more readable, and optimized everything that i thought "might" be an issue, but it again didnt change anything for the ranking.

I tried contacting google, but they never replied.

I wonder if there's a big elephant in the room that i can't see, or how you experts would go about in this situation?

Thanks for reading

You've checked the Webmaster Tools for any messages, right?

The content seems quite thin. That might be a problem.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

      1. Thanks for your reply, yes i've regularly checked in the google webmaster tools, but nothing, besides a few deadlinks.

      2. Yeah i thought about that too, there's an image and a pdf for every obituary, but not much indexable text, still, other pages that came online after us, like todesanzeigenportal.ch dont have more text, yet still get listed in those 1-3 top positions for every person, like we used to before.

If there are no messages in Google Search Console, I think the next step would be to export all of your backlinks from there and start analyzing.

It's a pain in the ass but needs to be done I guess...

      Thanks for the tip!
Interestingly, when i export the list of backlinks from the google search console, i only see legitimate, local pages, but when i look at the Awstats-Statistics for "Links from an external page" i find about 100 trash links like this:

      http://all-sims dot ru
      http://royal-betting dot net
      http://proekt-mos dot ru
      http://cool-wedding dot net

      also, some adult domains.

Any idea why not one of those 100 pages appear in the google search console? (i downloaded the full csv list, tried all 3 csv download options)
Or is there another way to find all backlinks of a domain?

Changing URLs while trying to rank a page is like a shotgun blast to the foot. It's not pretty & someone always ends up crying.
